Meet Mike Peyla:

Mike Peyla

There are stories of inspiration out there that make you realize how adaptive people can be. This is a quick story about Mike Peyla from Ohio. Mike is a customer of Seyco and they shared his story with me. The paragraph below was sent to me by Mike Morris of Seyco.

From Mike Morris(Seyco)
"Meet Seyco's customer Mike Peyla of Ohio. Mike is one of our most enthusiastic scrollers. Having conquered many challenges that no doubt would discourage many of us to the point we would not even have tried the scroll saw. Mike has done a lot of very impressive scroll sawing with only one arm and his one hand only has a thumb, little finger, and three nubs. Oh and incidentally he has a leg missing also! Mike agreed to our introduction of his accomplishments and handicaps in hopes it might encourage others with handicaps not to quit trying! Our sincere congratulations to Mike on his accomplishments in the world of scroll sawing!"

We all have challenges to overcome. Some of the challenges are minor and some are significant. Obviously, Mike Peyla had some significant challenges to get past. I have met several people who achieve things that others see as almost impossible. All of them had one thing in common. They never said, "I can't". They could and they worked to make it happen.

Not every obstacle can be overcome but many times it is worth the effort to see what can be accomplished. Mike proves that every day.

Thanks, Mik Peyla for allowing me to share your story.

Fuzzies are a pain:

Butane Torch
Buy at Bear Woods

Having tear-out (fuzzies) on the reverse side of your scroll saw cuts are normal. They can be reduced by using reverse tooth blades but not eliminated. If the project is very detailed with lots of small interior cuts the fuzzies can be a real pain to sand away.

There is one way to get rid of 90% of the fuzzies in just a few seconds but it has some drawbacks also. A very quick pass with a butane torch will burn them away almost instantly. The keyword in that sentence is "quick". If you go even slightly too slow you will have scorch marks. The more you practice the better you get at not burning the project. This is one technique that you absolutely need to practice on a scrap before you scorch your finished project.

The scorching in the close-up photo below is about as good as I get. It is basically imperceivable without the close-up.

I don't use this technique very often but there are times when it comes in handy. You will occasionally get some wood that has terrible backside tearout. If I am in a hurry or just don't feel like sanding I grab a torch.

I have spoken to people who use a lighter but I did not have very good luck with one.

Obviously, the other drawback is safety. I prefer the torches that you have to continue to hold the button for the flame to continue. As soon as you let go the flame goes out. Many if not most of the butane torches have this feature. The one shown above from Bear Woods has this feature.
