This Resurrection scene is 8" wide and 4.5" tall. I used multiple species of wood to give the scene some contrast. All the layers are 1/4" thick. There are five total layers. Each layer is glued together. Which makes it 1.25" thick, so it stands on its own.
This is a very easy pattern to cut. There are no interior cuts. There is a little veining but nothing complicated. This can easily be cut in under an hour.
How difficult is it to learn to use a scroll saw?
If you recently started using a scroll saw you may understand Georges's frustration. There is a learning curve. The learning curve is different for everyone but in general, your skill will improve rather quickly.
Some of the early things to focus on are holding the board too tight, Understanding blade drift, pushing the blade too hard, and remembering to breathe.
Pay attention to what is happening while you make your first cuts. Pick one issue, like pushing the blade too hard, and focus on that issue. Then move on to another issue. You will work through them one at a time.
If you get frustrated it is best to stop for a while. When you come back to the saw spend a few minutes understanding what caused the frustration and try to come up with a plan to make it better.
In time the techniques will become muscle memory and the process of scrolling becomes relaxing.
Now let me be honest. It is not always relaxing even for people who have used the scroll saw for years. We all have bad days. When you are having that bad day stop and smile, even if you have to fake the smile. It is almost impossible to be mad and smile at the same time.
As you start to see your skill improve, push the difficulty of the patterns you select to be more challenging. It's okay to bite off more than you can chew. The best learning starts when you push your limits.
Finally, learn to enjoy the process.
