As of September 2023, there were around 192,400 school bus drivers working in K–12 schools in the United States, which is 15.1% lower than in September 2019. This number is not enough to cover all the routes needed to safely transport students to school, and the driver turnover rate is between 10–20%.
I live right across the river from Louisville KY. They had a rough start to the year with the bus schedules. Their drivers say that student behavior is a problem, They currently have 553 drivers and 569 routes. Since July of 2023, they have reported losing over 100 drivers.
These numbers are disheartening and are generally blamed on all the typical reasons. Low pay, no benefits, poor hours, etc. Another factor is that it takes a certain type of person to interact with children while being able to focus on driving.
I had a few requests for an end-of-year gift for the child's bus driver. Many children developed a strong relationship with their driver. Let's face it, being a school bus driver is not a simple job. It may sound easy but once you hear what they deal with you tend to be more understanding.
