Eagle and Flag Scroll Saw Pattern.

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
This pattern is 14 inches wide. It is 3 layers. There are not that many interior cuts so it is not too difficult of a pattern cut.

When you start dealing with larger boards on the scroll saw they can be more difficult to maneuver around the table. If you typically sit while you cut you may find it easier to stand when cutting lager pieces. That gives you a chance to move your position when to board is hanging over the front of the table.

Choosing which scroll saw blade to use: Forget the rules and charts.

One of the most common emails I receive is about which blade to use for a particular project. It is probably the most confusing subject for someone new to the scroll saw hobby. There are so many different types of blades that knowing what they are all good for is a challenge.

If you are new to the scroll saw I am going to make it easy for you to choose a blade. If you are cutting the types of patterns you see on my blog you can use a #3 or #5 scroll reverse blade for 95% of them.

The #3 and #5 are small enough to get into most interior cuts. The #5 is large enough to cut even thicker woods. The reverse teeth just help reduce the tear-out on the back side of the cut and reduce sanding.

That is really all you need to know to get started. As your experience grows to can experiment with different blades. You may want to cut jig saw puzzles, metal or plastic. These can be done more easily with specialty blades. Add them as you come across the need. Of course there are spiral blades but they are only really useful on portrait style patterns.

Don't make it difficult. Just buy yourself a set of these two blades and start cutting.

Bear Woods Pegas Scroll Saw Blade Giveaway:

In the post above I spoke about choosing scroll saw blades. I was talking about the type of blade but what about the brand. Yes the brand is important. You want a quality blade. Pegas scroll saw blades are made for the highest quality steel. They are sharp and stay sharp longer. Trust me when I say you will feel the difference if you switch from a poor quality blade to the Pegas brand. I use Pegas blades.

Bear Woods has been supplying woodworkers with quality supplies since 1987. That's a long time. They have been in business that long because they treat their customers with respect and they sell quality products. Take a few minutes to see if they have what you need. Remember to bookmark the site and check back often.

Dust Deputy Cyclone Dust Separator:

A cyclone dust separator is one of the best tools I added to my work shop. I installed a large cyclone in front of my dust collector and the difference was huge. Most of the larger particles never make it to the dust bag. They end up in an easy to empty garbage can.

It helps keep the filter cleaner longer which keeps the suction stronger longer. Emptying the dust bag is a messy job. I always hated doing it. Because of that I would let it over fill and I had a real mess when it finally had to be done. Now I just keep the garbage can empty by pouring it into a large trash bag. It only takes seconds and is a much cleaner job.

The Dust Deputy Cyclone has been around for a while and is great when hooked up to a shop vac. If your primary dust collector is a shop vac then this product is worth every penny.

Check out this video review from John over at WorkshopAddict. He explains the benefits and shows the tool in use. This is a good video and will show the huge benefits of this tool.

Scroll Saw Bowl Pattern.

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
I first saw a bowl cut using concentric angle rings several years ago. It was done on a machine named the Ring Master. It was a cool tool but a little pricey. At some point later I saw a scroll saw book by Patrick Spielman that showed the same angled rings but they were cut using the scroll saw.

I'm not sure if Patrick invented the technique but he was the first to publish it. I gave it a try and made a vase. I have also made a few bowls over the years.

In 2009, Carole Rothman took the technique to a new design level and published two books through Fox Chapel. The bowls she designed were beautiful and I highly recommend you take a look a them if you find this technique interesting.

I designed this bowl pattern to produce a 7 inch diameter bowl with thin walls. After sanding the walls will end up about 1/8" thick. I just like to look and feel of the thin walls.

Here is a pictorial showing the technique.
Prepare the wood blank. 8" X 8" X 1/2" thick.
We have to cut the rings at an angle. It's a simple trick to determine the angle. The pattern has 1/4" wide rings. Use a pencil and draw two lines 1/4" apart on the edge of the board.
Lay the wood blank behind the scroll saw blade. Tilt the saw until the blade runs from the upper left to the lower right like the picture above shows. That will then be the correct angle.
We also need to drill the starter holes at the same angle. Cut the end of a scrap board at the angle you just set the saw to. Use the board as a guide to drill all the holes. It does not have to be perfect but the sanding is easier the closer you get the holes.
Cut all the rings with the scroll saw If you set the tilt like the photo above then you will cut the rings in a counter clockwise direction.
When you reverse stack the rings they will form a bowl.
If everything looks good we are ready for the glue up.
Apply a water proof glue to each ring. Stack the rings carefully and do not glue on the bottom.
We will glue on the bottom after we have the interior rings sanded. It's easier to sand without the bottom.
Use power and hand sanding to make the rings flush and smooth. This is the part of the project that take the most time and work. Sanding the interior of the bowl is the biggest challenge. I use a flexible shaft sander with an inflatable bulb sander. I also use a spindle sander. Use what you have but this is a very tough project to make without good sanding tools.

Finally glue on the bottom and sand it flush. Finish as desired.
_______________
I am about two days out on returning orders right now. I you order today I can probably have them ready for you to start cutting this weekend. I'll do my best to get them out early Saturday.

Wooden Bowls from the Scroll Saw

This is one of the books I mention in the post. The book is written by Carole Rothman. She designs some beautiful bowls and take the technique to a new level. Worth every penny.

Creating Beautiful Bowls Has Never Been Easier
While wood bowls are commonly made on a lathe, this guided resource offers 28 projects for crafting beautiful bowls with the more accessible scroll saw. You will not believe these bowls were made without a lathe!
Making wooden bowls has always been considered a "serious" woodworking project because you need a lathe and woodturning know-how. But, thanks to cake-decorator-turned-woodworker Carole Rothman, you can create amazing bowls, vases, candy dishes, and jars with just a flat piece of wood and your scroll saw.
Her easy-to-master techniques and clean patterns will quickly take you from basic bowls to beautifully laminated pieces. You'll learn how to work with thin wood, contour with sanding, and create a variety of different shapes.
With 28 projects to try, a useful guide on choosing the proper wood and supplies, and a section to help you create your own designs, this groundbreaking book is a must-have for any crafter or scroll saw enthusiast who wants to make stunning and useful works of art.
