Small Puzzle Lock Box Scroll Saw Pattern.

This little box is about the size of a ring box. The key needs to be removed before the lid will slide off. The box in this picture was the test cut. I modified the final pattern to change the shape of the key. The round key rotated inside the cut which did not work well.

The block of wood for the box is 1.75" X 1.75" X 1.75". This makes for a thick cut. Don't select too dense of a species of wood. I chose cherry which was also not a great choice because cherry has a tendency to scorch. It did and I had some sanding to do. Sanding changes the fit of parts and is not desirable on this project. Something like walnut would be a better choice.

The sequence that you cut this box is important. Follow the instructions in the pattern book.

Would you like to add carving to your woodworking skills?

Some of you are in parts of the world where it's too cold to go into the shop and cut on the scroll saw. Why not turn to a hobby that will let you cut wood and stay in the house? Carving can be tons of fun and you do not need God-given talent to carve a small character. At some point, you may even be able to combine your carving with other woodwork including the scroll saw projects you make.

I bought this book a few years ago. The carving above was one of my first attempts at carving one of these Little Guys. The book takes you cut by cut to the finished Little Guy. Once you learn the sequence of cuts you can change up the characters and make dozens of different Little Guys and Gals.

If you think you cannot carve then this is a good book to gain some confidence. You can get started with one knife and a tiny piece of carving wood.

You can buy the book, knife, and wood on Amazon for under $35. That's a small price for a hobby that just may give you many hours of fun.
