Be Strong Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

This plaque is large. The backer board is twenty inches wide by ten inches tall. Each line of the letters is one inch tall. I am showing the backer board painted black. Paint is optional.

I kept the graphics very simple. I wanted the message to be the standout point of the sign. We are going through times when courage and strength are very important. We need to not only be strong for ourselves but for those who look to us for leadership and a feeling of safety.

Scroll Saw Wooden Bowls by Carole Rothman: Revised Edition:

I have reviewed this book before but I thought it would be a great book for you to have for the lockdown. Cutting wooden bowls on the scroll saw has been around for several years. A few years ago Carole Rothman took the art to a new level. Luckily she put all her techniques in a book for us to learn from

If you have not seen one of these bowl projects before you will be surprised how simple the basic technique is. One small board is used. The concentric ring pattern is applied and the rings are cut on a bevel. When you reverse stack the rings they make a bowl.

Here is a link to one of my wooden bowl patterns that you can download to understand the technique. Once you see the basic technique then you can check out Carole's book for more advanced projects.

Last year Carole revised and added mot patterns to her original book. The extra patterns make the book a must buy even if you have the original book. The book sells for $12.99 which makes each pattern very inexpensive.

Here is a link to Carole's YouTube channel. She has several videos showing the making of these wooden bowls.

The book is laid out so you have more advanced projects as you get the technique mastered. The instructions point out all the tools and supplies you need.

Sanding is the toughest part of this technique. Hand sanding just won't get the job done on these projects. You will need power sanding. Carole shows different tools that can be used.

This is easily one of the most comprehensive books I have seen for any craft project.

Swans Art Scroll Saw Pattern.

Original swan graphic by www.freepik.com
Edited for the scroll saw by Steve Good

This pattern is three layers. In the top picture, I am simulating each layer as a different species of wood.

In this picture, I am simulating each layer as the same species of wood.

Download Below

The last picture shows each layer painted. I am just trying to give different ideas for you to consider.

The pattern comes in two sizes. The large pattern is 15 inches wide. The small pattern is ~10 inches wide.

Behind the scenes: How the bologna is made....

Some of you may be interested in the note below the top picture giving attribution to www.freepik.com for the swan graphics. As designers, we often use available graphics to add to our designs. In this case, I used the two graphics below for this pattern. I got them from www.freepik.com. Freepik allows for the use of their free graphics with attribution.

I took these two graphics and added detail and the three layers to make up a unique pattern. I normally try to add to the original graphic when I use one.

This is also one of the ways that I come up with a new pattern almost daily. In this case, I was browsing Freepik just looking for graphics. I saw the top swan with the extended wings and though I could use it for a pattern.

This definitely makes the process easier but not easy. I spent nearly three hours trying different designs before I settled on the three-layer design. I almost gave up on the swan graphics after deleting a few designs but I have learned to fight through those thoughts and often come up with something I like.

Graphics from www.freepik.com

When I cannot find an available free graphic I will often use a real photograph and draw the graphic freehand. When I want a more detailed graphic this technique usually works better.

There are many ways that I come up with new patterns. This is one technique that works especially when I am drawing a blank. I draw a blank pretty often. :)

Tropical Fish Silhouette Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

I cut this fish silhouette from 1/4" Baltic birch plywood and spray painted it black. The project stands just over 10.5 inches tall. The bottom base is 8.5 inches wide.

It looks fragile and it is but not so bad that you can't cut it. There are not too many interior cuts so the board stays pretty solid until you cut the perimeter. When you are ready to cut the perimeter don't start cutting from the edge of the board. Drill an entry hole outside the pattern and cut from there. This will keep the board more stable and less likely to cause a break.

Isaac knocks it out of the park. 1,000 toys in one day, plus!

View Bear Woods Facebook page for video

Isaac wanted to put together an event to make 1,000 toys for children in need. He wanted to do it in one day. A marathon cut. We put out the word for volunteers and you folks stepped up. The last I heard they had over 50 volunteers cutting, and pledged over 2,000 toys. That is double the goal. I would say that it is a success.

Isaac is the son of Bear Woods owner Stephen Dinesen. I believe he is 15 years old. I know how proud Stephen is in Isaac and it's for good reason. For a young man to decide to spend an entire Saturday making toys for sick and underprivileged children is just special. Thank you, Isaac.

Isaac has a good role model in Stephen. Bear Woods is always looking for ways to give back to the community. Stephen does a lot of his charitable work behind the scenes. This is the kind of company that I am proud to be associated with. Good people.

Thanks to all the volunteers who participated. I know that your local children's charities will appreciate the time and effort you put into this project for them.

Bear Woods carries many of your wood crafting supplies and tools. They are a source for the Pegas 21" scroll saw and Pegas brand scroll saw blades. Clock parts, hardware, wooden parts, and adding more products every month. Support the businesses that support our hobby.
