Amazing Grace Music Scroll Saw Pattern

The music for Amazing Grace was published in 1779. The words were written in 1772 by the poet John Newton. The message of Amazing Grace is that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God.

Amazing Grace is one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world. The song has been professionally recorded over 7,000 times. The song has been performed at millions of memorable events and is associated with many cherished memories.

The pattern comes in two sizes. The small pattern is 10.25" wide and the large pattern is just over 13" wide.

Stack Cutting Techniques:

One scroll saw technique that many new scrollers put off is learning to stack cut.  That's okay because stack cutting is not essential. It is just very handy when you need to produce more than one of the same piece.

Stack cutting is simply stacking two boards together and applying the pattern on top. When you cut the pattern you will have a duplicate from each board. Depending on the thickness of the board you can stack cut two or more parts at a time.

Even when you only need one of the projects you are cutting, stack cutting may be useful. If the project has four wheels then you can stack cut all four of them at the same time.

When you stack the boards together you need a method to keep the boards together as you make the cuts. In the photos below I show three methods to assemble the stack. There are other methods not shown below so use whatever method you find handy.

I will show you the brad nail, tape, and hot glue methods.

Start with two or more boards that are roughly the same size.

The brad mail method works very well and is also fast. Simply drive nails into the corners. Don't drive the nails all the way through the stack. If you leave the nails sticking out just a little they can be handy as a handhold while you cut.

The tape method is also simple. Simply wrap the boards in tape. You do want to ensure that the wrap is fairly tight so the boards don't shift. I use this method most often because I like to have tape under the pattern and this kills two birds with one stone. Blue tape is not cheap so that has to be considered.

Hot melt glue works well. There is no chance of the boards slipping with the nail or the hot glue method. If I did not have to get the hot glue gun out and warm it up I would probably use this method more often. Seems like I am always in a hurry to meet my deadline to publish.

When I apply the hot glue I use a zig-zag line to make sure I get both boards attached well. Sometimes a straight line down the seam is not strong enough.

If you have never used the stack cutting technique then you might find it handy. If you are in no hurry and don't mind cutting the part more than one time then that works just as well. I will add one exception. If you need two identical parts then stack cutting will give you the most accurate cuts.

While wood bowls are commonly made on a lathe, this updated and expanded guided resource offers 30 projects for crafting beautiful bowls with the more accessible scroll saw.

Each project contains clear instructions and beautiful illustrations. The projects are organized in a progressive learning format, so everyone can find something exciting to make—even a new scroller!

Beginning crafters can start with the most basic starter bowl and gradually work their way toward more elaborate bowls—such as laminated swag bowls; a flared lobed bowl made with varied angles; a thin, eight-segmented bowl; and an inward curving bowl. Original patterns for other types of vessels include a vase, a ginger jar, and a candy dish.

For advanced wood crafters, an appendix expands upon the earlier material and pushes the wood artist to create new patterns or adapt the existing ones to create art of your very own.

With Scroll Saw Wooden Bowls from Carole Rothman, you will learn to make such amazing bowls on your scroll saw that you and your friends won't believe they were made without a lathe!
