For our friends up north.

Let me start out by saying that I don't do many patterns of this type for countries other than the United States. Obviously being American I am proud of our armed forces and like to show that pride as often as possible. Today I made an exception because I received an email from a friend up north of the border. Paul reminded me that the Canadian armed forces shared our sacrifice in the Korean war. He ask if I would do this pattern and I am happy to do it.

The Canadians had the second most boots on the ground during the war. They sent 26,791 troops to fight in the conflict. 1,558 causalities including 516 who paid the ultimate price with their lives. There were a total of 17 countries who sent forces to Korea fighting under the United Nations Command. Don't hold me to all the stats I share. I look them up online and many sites give different answers. I won't have a chance to make patterns of all these countries but that in no way is meant as a slight. There are heroes all over the world.

Let me make another point that is sometimes difficult for me to wrap my head around. Because I write a blog that reaches most of the countries in the world I get to talk to a lot of people. Some of those people live in countries that many here would consider hostile to us. On average that's not true. 99% of all the people in every country just want to live in peace and raise their families. When we talk it's like talking to my next door neighbor. Wars are started by a very small number of people. Unfortunately a very large number of people pay the price.  Maybe with luck all the open communications helped by the internet is the beginning of more people understanding we are all friends.  There never needs to be another war. Of course there will be but we can dream can't we?

When I design a pattern for the military I'm not honoring the war. War is sick. I'm honoring the young men and women who leave their homes and families behind to do what their country calls them to do.

I do get a few emails asking that I not do these patterns. Of course I get a few emails asking that I not do religious, basketball, football, dog, cat, big, small etc....  I do what I do.
