Tall Clock Scroll Saw Pattern

Download the Pattern Below

This clock is 15" tall. The body of the clock is made from two 3/4" thick boards. You will be able to use a clock insert like the photo or a clock movement. If you go with the movement you will need hands and a paper face dial. I did include a paper dial for you to print on high-quality photo paper but it will not be as durable as a dial you purchase. All of these parts are available on Amazon.

It's Back

A couple of years ago I had a web page that my son-in-law coded for me that listed every blog post on a single web page. It included the title of that post with a link to it. It also has a short description. It was handy and used by several of you. Over 5,300 posts so the page load is a little slow. My blog started May 12th, 2007 so time has added up a lot of posts.

Unfortunately, Google made some design changes and the code for my page broke. This all happened a few months ago and we never got it repaired. Well, this week I took a stab at the code with the help of AI. We got it fixed plus added a new feature. Now the posts list also has a thumbnail of a photo from that post. On my network, it takes about 30 seconds to load the first time. It caches and then loads a bit faster. You will know when the page is fully loaded when the total number of posts is listed.

The thumbnail image does not work on all of the posts but it is still handy so I left the feature in.

Our Hobby is Aging

The chart below is the "Age Range" of visitors to my blog. 68.7% of us are over 65 years young. That number is increasing. In October of 2018, the number was 63.1 years young. These numbers include around 20,000 folks per day so I feel they show a trend for our hobby. No surprise, we are aging.

A few things start to happen as a customer base ages. Up to a certain age, the spending power of the buyer increases. Manufacturers may sell fewer items but the increased spending power somewhat offsets the decline.

There is a point when spending power by age starts to decline. The average peak spending power in the US is 50 - 54. After that, there is a gradual decline until about 70 when it levels off.

I know many folks in the industry and most of them tell me their sales are slow. It may be the economy's traditional ups and downs or we may be reaching the age that this is the new norm.

I bring this up because we are the only ones who can make a difference. Today the internet brings most new scrollers to our hobby. They see a video or advertisement and give it a try. A good number of those people use the saw a couple of times then it gets sent to the closet. There are all kinds of reasons for it hitting the closet but it is mainly caused by frustration of the saw not doing what they hoped it would do. Most of us start with entry-level saws and they can be frustrating at times.

When a new person comes to the hobby through the help of a seasoned scroller they are way more likely to stick with it. They get tips and advice on how to avoid the frustrations. They get to see a seasoned scroller work and that is super important. I have seen new scrollers think that the blade will last for weeks. When I explain that the actual time for a blade is under an hour they don't end up trying to make cuts with a blade that is dull. That frustration is eliminated.

Long story short, if you have the opportunity to show someone our hobby, don't be shy. I'm not just talking about teaching them to scroll. I am talking about simple demonstrations or showing off your projects. About 100 years ago I saw a gentleman doing a scroll saw demonstration in the center of a mall. I was interested but it still took a few more years before I jumped into the hobby. His demonstration was still the reason I took up the hobby.

My favorite talent contest show is Dancing with the Stars. That may put a wrinkle in my man card but I believe it is the most difficult TV talent contest. Season 33 will premiere on Sept. 17th. I saw an ad for the show and that inspired this pattern.

The pattern is three 8 X 10 X 1/4" thick layers.

The round box is 7.25" in diameter. It is cut from 1/4" and 3/4" thick wood.
You want to cut the rings carefully or you will have extra sanding to do. Once you get the rings clued together, sand the inside and outside smooth so you minimize the transition between the rings.

Arcade Playground

I have coded a couple more games and placed them in the Arcade. The first new game is a Casino Poker Machine. The second is a very simplified Wheel of Fortune-style game. Click the play button below to find the games. If you do not see the Poker Machine or Wheel buttons then press the ctrl F5 to refresh the cache.
