Mothers Day

Mothers Day is just around the corner. This is a simple mini clock pattern for you to cut. The pattern requires a 1 7/16" mini clock insert.

Tomorrow is a day I have been looking forward to for a while now. There is a Woodcraft woodworking store opening here in town. I have had to drive about 90 miles to another city to visit Woodcraft in the past. It will be nice to be able to buy my supplies without spending all that money on gas.

Email from Tami

I received an email from Tami today. Her father has been a scroller for several years. They recently found my blog and decided to redesign one of my earlier patterns. This is a great way to get started designing patterns. I think it looks great.

Tami was obviously very proud of her father and his work. She wanted to share a picture of the round praying hands box. Thanks Tami and tell your dad to keep us posted on his new designs.

24 Mini Animal Clocks

If you are looking for some very easy patterns to cut these clocks should do fine. All these clocks require a 1 7/16 mini clock insert. Use a 1 3/8" forstner bit to cut the hole for the clock.

Two Word Art Patterns

Here are a couple word art patterns for Mothers Day and Fathers Day. (Worlds Best Mom) and (Worlds Best Dad). These patterns are 9 1/2" long and under 2" high. I usually cut these word art patterns in clear Pine. The Pine is easy to cut and no one really cares what wood you use in this type of pattern.

SK8 OR DIE Clock

This skateboarder pattern might just make your teenage stunt skater appreciate your work. The pattern requires a 1 7/16" mini clock insert. Cut this pattern from 3/4" wood to give it some depth. This is another pattern that could be customized with the skaters name placed on the base in front of the clock.

Army Retired Pattern

Do you have a retired US Army veteran in your life. Make them this wall hanging and they can show their pride to be a veteran.

Use 1/4 inch ply for the backer board. The eagle should be cut from 1/4" hard wood and applied to the backer board. Apply color paper behind the backer board to add a little color if you like.

Three Candle Stand

This candle stand is 9 inches long. It is designed to be cut from 1/4" stock. It is best to stack cut the two base pieces so the match well. This project is very easy and can be cut quickly. There are only eight interior cuts in the base if you stack cut them.

I wanted to mention that I plan to attend the Scrollsaw Association of the World EXPO in Wilmington OH. The EXPO is the 12th and 13th of July 2008. If any of you plan to attend maybe we can meet and say hi. Right now I plan to attend Saturday but I'm not sure about Sunday.

Mothes Day Angels

I had a request from Jeanie to do a wall hanging of an angel for Mothers Day. Jeanie is new to scrolling and wanted to make something special for her mother.

This pattern is approximately 8" x 10" so you might have to do a glued up panel for the frame. You should use a contrasting wood for the angels. The wood is all 1/4" thick.

Paper Towel Holder Pattern

This paper towel holder will look nice on the kitchen counter. The base and frame are made from 1/2" walnut. Use a 1" wooden dowel rod to hold the towels.

I know the second picture looks like it's floating. It was still damp and I didn't want it to stain my cloth. I sat it on a small block. No magic involved. :)

The blog reached the 1000 plus subscriber mark last week. When I started the Scrollsaw Workshop blog in May of last year I had no expectations of what would happen. We are approaching the 1 year anniversary of the blog. I want to thank all of you for supporting the site. I have had a blast talking with many of you and look forward to meeting even more of you in the future.

Hummingbird Shelf Pattern

This little shelf will hold a couple small candles or other objects. The shelf is 8" wide and 3 1/4" deep. Use 1/2" thick wood of your choice.

This will be a rather delicate piece so be careful with it.

Making Picture Frames with Colin Knecht from www.woodworkweb.com

Most scrollers will need to make frames at some point. I found these videos on YouTube by Colin Knecht that show a simple and accurate way to make any size frame. Nice Fret Work from Eltee Thibodeaux

Thanks Eltee for sharing your work with all of us. These are definitely works to be proud of.

Mini Fret Clock Pattern

This pattern was a lot of fun to build. The clock only stands 6" tall. It uses a 1 7/16" mini clock insert. You can cut the pieces in an hour or two. Everything is 1/4" thick wood. I used a Flying Dutchman #5 scroll reverse blade for all the cuts. Use contrasting woods for the doors and fence. If you need thin lumber to build this project check out Mystic Hardwood at the link below.

I finally had some time to get back in the workshop today. It was about 72 degrees here in Lexington today and felt wonderful to be in the shop. I did a little cleaning and organizing. I bought several board feet of curly maple and Peruvian Walnut Saturday. Now I have my wood storage racks full again.

On The Cross

This three layered pattern of Jesus on the cross is a little over 8 inches tall. You should use nicely contrasting woods to make the layers stand out.

I received some exciting news today. The Scrollsaw Workshop was voted 78th out of over 3000 blogs in the recreation category with a score of 8.2 out of 10. The editor of www.blogged.com sent me a nice email to let me know. I have no idea what this means but it made me happy.

Think Safety

Remember to keep the safety of yourself and others in your work shop in your thoughts at all times. Always wear eye and ear protection. Follow all the manufactures warnings that came with your power tools. If I demonstrate something on this web site that you don't feel is safe, don't do it. Your safety is your responsibility. Fingers are handy things, try to keep all of them.
