Mother's Day is less than a month away. I bet she would like to receive something handmade along with that those diamond earrings. There are plenty of gifts to make in my free online catalog. This is another one to choose from.

This wooden Mother's Day card is 10" tall. It is 3 layers thick of either 1/4" or 1/8" thick Baltic birch plywood. I am showing the back layer painted red.

Change it up if you like. Just use the fretwork layer and make it 3/4" thick.

Deer Mount Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download the Pattern Below

Important, please read: This pattern was not originally designed by me. It is a laser pattern that was made freely available. I modified it to be used on the scroll saw. I do not have permission for you to sell the finished project made from this pattern. It was made available for personal use. Please respect the original designer and not sell the project.

After I modified this pattern to be cut from 1/8" thick Baltic birch plywood, I used one of my lasers to do the test cut. That is why you see the burnt edges. This pattern can be easily edited for use on your laser.

This will not be a difficult pattern to cut on the scroll saw. It can be made even easier by stack cutting two at a time. 1/4" is easier to cut than 1/8".

One note about this project is that the only glue I used is on the two parts of the shield and I glued the neck to the shield. All the rest of the pieces are just slid together. You can use glue but if your joints are tight enough and can skip the glue.

I added slots and tabs on the back of the neck and the shield for a better glue joint.

One funny thing about the project is my city boy ignorance. I could not decide if the two forward-facing antlers should go forward or backward. The original did not show the completed project. I looked at a few real dear antlers and finally flipped them to face forward. I think that's correct. 🤔

Wood Burning Deluxe Starter Kit

One creative tool that goes very well with the scroll saw is a nice wood-burning tool. Many scroll saw projects can be taken to a new level utilizing pyrography. The cheap wood burners that you get for under $50 at craft stores are difficult to use because you can't control the temperature.

The Colwood units sold by Bear Woods are fantastic. I have owned one for a few years and enjoy it a lot. Temperature control makes all the difference in the world. With the correct temp and wood combination, it feels like drawing with an inkpen.

Get started burning with Colwood's original unit and top seller. This time-tested tabletop design features a lighted on/off switch, a terminal barrier for strong connections but easy cord changes, and a handpiece clip on the top. This deluxe kit includes a replacable tip handpiece, tip puller cleaning cloth, honing paper, tip case, and the standard tip package: 1/4" skew (B), writing tip (C), 3/16" small round (D), 1/8" tight round (J), 3/16" shader (S), 5/32" small point (K), micro writing (MC), 3/32" micro rounded heel (MR), and 1/8" small calligraphy (C1).

This pack includes:
WB-DETAILER - The Detailer
WB-21 - Deluxe Tip Package
WB-03 - EZ Tip Puller
WB-02 - Replaceable Tip Handpiece
WB-04 - Cleaning Cloth
WB-05 - Honing Paper

Meet Mike Peyla:

Mike Peyla

There are stories of inspiration out there that make you realize how adaptive people can be. This is a quick story about Mike Peyla from Ohio. Mike is a customer of Seyco and they shared his story with me. The paragraph below was sent to me by Mike Morris of Seyco.

From Mike Morris(Seyco)
"Meet Seyco's customer Mike Peyla of Ohio. Mike is one of our most enthusiastic scrollers. Having conquered many challenges that no doubt would discourage many of us to the point we would not even have tried the scroll saw. Mike has done a lot of very impressive scroll sawing with only one arm and his one hand only has a thumb, little finger, and three nubs. Oh and incidentally he has a leg missing also! Mike agreed to our introduction of his accomplishments and handicaps in hopes it might encourage others with handicaps not to quit trying! Our sincere congratulations to Mike on his accomplishments in the world of scroll sawing!"

We all have challenges to overcome. Some of the challenges are minor and some are significant. Obviously, Mike Peyla had some significant challenges to get past. I have met several people who achieve things that others see as almost impossible. All of them had one thing in common. They never said, "I can't". They could and they worked to make it happen.

Not every obstacle can be overcome but many times it is worth the effort to see what can be accomplished. Mike proves that every day.

Thanks, Mik Peyla for allowing me to share your story.

Fuzzies are a pain:

Butane Torch
Buy at Bear Woods

Having tear-out (fuzzies) on the reverse side of your scroll saw cuts are normal. They can be reduced by using reverse tooth blades but not eliminated. If the project is very detailed with lots of small interior cuts the fuzzies can be a real pain to sand away.

There is one way to get rid of 90% of the fuzzies in just a few seconds but it has some drawbacks also. A very quick pass with a butane torch will burn them away almost instantly. The keyword in that sentence is "quick". If you go even slightly too slow you will have scorch marks. The more you practice the better you get at not burning the project. This is one technique that you absolutely need to practice on a scrap before you scorch your finished project.

The scorching in the close-up photo below is about as good as I get. It is basically imperceivable without the close-up.

I don't use this technique very often but there are times when it comes in handy. You will occasionally get some wood that has terrible backside tearout. If I am in a hurry or just don't feel like sanding I grab a torch.

I have spoken to people who use a lighter but I did not have very good luck with one.

Obviously, the other drawback is safety. I prefer the torches that you have to continue to hold the button for the flame to continue. As soon as you let go the flame goes out. Many if not most of the butane torches have this feature. The one shown above from Bear Woods has this feature.
