Tomorrow is Valentines Day. I was curious when Valentine's Day started. I was surprised to find out that the origin of the holiday is somewhat murky. Most of what I read pointed to the Roman priest(St. Valentine) who secretly performed marriages of Roman soldiers. The Roman emperor Claudius persecuted the church and forbade the marriage of young soldiers. He thought unmarried soldiers fought better.
Eventually St. Valentine was caught, imprisoned and tortured. He was sentenced to a three part execution of beating, stoning and decapitation.
It was written that while imprisoned, St. Valentine healed the blind daughter of Asterius through prayer. Asterius was to judge St. Valentine during the trial by Roman law. Asterius was so impressed with the power of prayer that he converted to Christianity.
Just before St. Valentine was executed he penned a letter to the healed blind girl. He signed the letter "From your Valentine". From that letter the romantic tradition began.
I have no idea how accurate this story is but it sounds like a good plot for a movie of the week.
