Relief Cut Shelf.
This shelf is 25 inches long and 5 1/2 inches deep. The center medallion is a relief cut to allow it to protrude from the back board. There is a simple tutorial that explains relief cuts in the pattern. On this shelf I used a #5 blade and set the table angle to 3 degrees to get a 1/4" relief.
Round over the medallion to give it a smooth look before you glue it in place.
The top shelf has a router detail on the front and sides to give it a more finished look.
The Shelf is attached with screws that are counter sunk and plugged with wood buttons. The brackets are attached to the medallion board with glue only.
The video below shows how to make a bevel gauge and also explains relief cuts in more detail.
