This candle holder will hold up to a 4.5" diameter candle. All the parts are 1/4" thick. There are nine upright pieces. You can reduce the cut time considerably with stack cutting. If you are new to stack cutting I put together a basics video to show you some options.

Sovol SV01 Pro 3D Printer Update

Back in early January I purchased the Sovol SV01 Pro 3D printer. I mentioned it on the blog back then and a few folks have asked for an update.

This 3D printer costs $359. That is an entry-level 3D printer. It does have auto bed leveling and filament runout sensor which are more common on entry level printers these days. The touchscreen is pretty responsive and I like the user interface.

The provided slicer software is Cura. When I first started using Cura I was not a big fan. I normally use the Simplify3D slicer which I am more familiar with. After spending some time with Cura and understanding it's features better it has grown on me.

I did have some issues with build plate adhesion. After some tweaking I have most of that solved.

I like this printer slightly better than my QIDI 3D printer simply because it has more up to date features like auto bed leveling.

My typical use of a 3D printer is mostly utilitarian. I print things I need in my shop or around the house. Examples are Shop Vac hose adapters, Shelf bracket replacements, boxes for electronic projects, desk accessories etc...

The Sovol SV01 Pro is perfect for those applications. With some tweaking of the settings I can get very good quality prints but I often just print in a lower quality mode for speed. A Shop Vac adapter does not need to be perfectly smooth. It just needs to fit.

If you are looking for a first 3D printer this is a decent option. It is best if you learn to design your own 3D models but there are thousands of free models out there. Thingiverse is one place to download free models.

Here are some examples of things I have printed.

A few of my 3D prints.
The basket and Cowboy scene are from my patterns.
The Superman was a model I downloaded for testing.
I use the phone holder(my design) on my computer desk.

If you cut all seven layers you will have a substantial piece of art at 1.75" thick. The pattern comes in two sizes. The large pattern is 8" wide and the small pattern is 6" wide. Yes, I know that this pattern will take a lot of wood but I believe plywood will work fine for this project.

If this inspires you to buy your own yacht then check out this link. They range from $1.5 million up to about $28 million. https://www.boatinternational.com/yachts-for-sale/sailing-yachts. I sure wish this were one of my affiliate links. 7% of $28 million is almost $2 million dollars. I could make do with that.⛵

There are seven layers but you can choose the ones you want to use. The piece below is only two of the layers.

Dust collection is important even in a small woodworking shop.

Woodworking can be messy and hazardous if you don't take precautions. Almost every power woodworking tool creates dust.

A few years ago I learned a good lesson. I was building a desk out of exotic wood, bubinga. The desk build took a few days and I did not use any dust collection or dust mask. I ended up being allergic to that species of wood and I spent about a week with a sore throat, congestion, and itching. I had a bubinga splinter in my hand and it turned red and hurt like crazy. I recovered from those symptoms but who knows what that did to my lungs.

I knew at that point that I needed better dust collection and protection. I purchased a small Jet dust collector, a WEN air filtration system, and two styles of dust masks. I still use all of them today.

I can't find the Jet dust collector I purchased online now but it is similar to this WEN unit. I use this on all my major dust-producing tools., table saw, planer, band saw, and router table. This greatly reduces the dust at the tool and helps keep some of the dust out of the air. It absolutely helps keep my shop cleaner.

I don't use this dust collector with the smaller tools. I use shop vacs on my scroll saws and sanding tools.

It is very important to remove the small dust that hangs in the air. That is the dust that ends up in your lungs and causes so many health problems. I use the WEN air filtration system mounted to my ceiling. I don't own an air quality meter so I can't give you facts about how well this works but I can say this. When I run this unit I see much less fine dust on top of my tools. It comes with a remote and other than cleaning/replacing filters it has needed no maintenance.

When I have a job that will produce lots of dust I wear this respirator. When I empty the shop vac or dust collector this is what I use. It has built-in filters and is reasonably comfortable for short tern use. I would not want to wear it for longer than several minutes.

When I am cutting at the scroll saw I need a more comfortable mask similar to the one below. I have purchased several type and brands and for the most part, they have all been fine.
