March 29th, Vietnam Veterans Day Scroll Saw Pattern.

Vietnam Veterans Day commemorates the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families and is part of a national effort to recognize the men and women who were denied a proper welcome upon returning home more than 40 years ago.

Most states celebrate “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” on March 29 or 30 of each year. Though there is some debate, March 29 is generally viewed as a more appropriate date. On that day in 1973, the last combat troops were withdrawn from Vietnam and the last prisoners of war held in North Vietnam arrived on American soil. It is also the date President Nixon chose for the first Vietnam Veterans Day in 1974.

Of the 2,709,918 Americans who served in Vietnam, Less than 850,000 are estimated to be alive today, with the youngest American Vietnam veteran's age approximated to be 54 years old. If you have a Vietnam Veteran in your family take the time to honor their service.

12.5 inch tall F-15 Eagle Plaque Scroll Saw Pattern.

I made this pattern large so the fretwork would be easier to cut.  The fretwork has a lot of inside cuts and will tend to get fragile. Take your time and plan your cuts. The pattern will print out on four 8.5 X 11 inch pages. You will need to tape the pages together to make a complete pattern before you apply it to your wood blank.

We Love our Crossing Guard Scroll Saw Pattern.

I had a request for a crossing guard pattern. I thought a few others might appreciate the pattern also so I created one for a man and a woman.

The following video demonstrates the technique for making my wooden vases.

Easter Word Art Scroll Saw Pattern.

One last Easter pattern for this year. This Easter word art can be cut from 3/4" thick wood. The bunny rabbit in this pattern came from www.vectoropenstock.com and was modified and added to the pattern.

One question I get from time to time is about usage rights on the projects made from my patterns. I do not put any restrictions on the projects made from my patterns. You are free to make and sell as many of the projects as you like including mass production. Of course I appreciate receiving 1% of any sales over $1,000,000.

I do put restrictions on the patterns. I retain all rights to the patterns.  They can never be sold. They should never be hosted on another website even if offered for free. You are free to give the patterns to another person but the cover page needs to be included. You are free to modify the pattern to suit your needs for personal use.

I appreciate hearing about any success you have selling your crafts. If a particular project from one of my patterns sells well let me know. I'll try to use the information to create more patterns that will sell well also.

Four Piece Painted Flower Cat Scroll Saw Pattern.

There are only four pieces to cut from this pattern. After you get it cut out you can use the included paint guide to add the color and decorations. The little cat is ~9.25 inches long. I recommend cutting her from clear pine or MDF. The pine will be easier to paint. For all the black markings and outlines use a Sharpie marker.

It has been a while since I talked about my Jigsaw Puzzle Template book. Jigsaw puzzles are fun and easy to make on the scroll saw. With my templates you can make puzzles from any of the photos you take at birthdays, weddings and other memorial events.

There are seven different templates to cover your different size pictures.

The book is a digital download and is available immediately after payment. Read the instructions at the bottom of this post for details. I will also send a follow up email with the download link as soon as I can.

You can find Baltic Birch plywood for your puzzles many places online. Here is a link to just one.

Large Easter Bunny with Egg and Chick Scroll Saw Pattern.

This pattern is approximately 8" X 7". If you cut it from 3/4" thick wood it should be free standing. There is quite a bit of veining in this pattern. I always get questions about these interior lines. Many new scrollers ask how these lines are made. Some think they are drawn on the project once it is finished. These interior lines (veining) are created with the blade.

After you cut all the pattern then just go back with the blade and follow the lines. They are designed to start from an exterior and finish before they cut the project apart. Notice the line that separates the two ears. It starts at the middle of the two ears and ends at the bottom of the ear. The eyelashes start inside the eye and go up. All the veining is done with this approach.  I sometimes switch to a number 7 blade to cut veining. It is thick enough to make the veining stand out.

A bad day fishing is better than a good day working!

The weather here in Kentucky is starting to look like spring. Tomorrow it's going to be almost 80 degrees. Then we will be in the 50's and 60's the rest of the week. It was rainy today but the temperature was perfect. When you went outside it made you think about getting away from work and doing outdoor activities.

This coming weekend I plan to clean up my shop.  It's always great to be able to open the door and let the fresh air in and the wood dust out. Talking about cleaning the shop reminds me that it's time to talk about shop safety again.

Take a few minutes to make sure everything is in shape. Check that your flammable materials are stored safely. Check your power cords for wear. Pick up tripping hazards. Check that all the safety guards on your power tools are installed. Inspect your fire extinguisher for proper operation. Make sure all you blades are sharp. A dull blade is a dangerous blade.

Make sure you have a stocked first aid box where you can find it. Make sure you understand the proper procedures for using your power tools. Don't make risky cuts. There is a proper way to do things safely. Take the time to learn your tools. If you are not sure then enroll in a course.

Ensure that you have the proper dust protection available and use it. Long term exposure to dust can be very dangerous and stop you from enjoying the hobby or worse.

Dress safely when working in the shop. Please don't go in the shop dressed like you are going to the beach. Proper foot wear is important. I see many guys working in open toed foot wear. Long sleeved shirts need to be rolled up. Leave your jewelry in the house.

When using chemicals ensure you have proper ventilation. Protect your lungs with the correct mask for the material you are using. Dispose of the rags properly.

Remove clutter from your shop. When you are working you need to have space to move around without bumping into something. Don't over reach when using a tool. Move what's in the way and use the tool correctly.

These are just a few suggestions to make your hobby safe and fun. Accidents in woodworking shops can change your life forever.

2016 Wedding Cake Topper Scroll Saw Pattern.

If you have a wedding coming up this year you may be able to use this pattern. Cake toppers seem to be a popular item these days. The base of this topper is ~9 inches and it is ~7 inches tall. You may need to adjust the size of the pattern for your cake.

I think you will have the best results by cutting these from 1/4" Baltic Birch ply. The ply will give it strength. These are fairly fragile projects so they will need to be protected from mishandling. They can be left natural or painted. I think I would leave the stakes natural to prevent any contamination of the cake.

Free High Fives Wall Hanging Scroll Saw Pattern.

I want to thank all the well wishers about my pending retirement.  A common thread in most of the email was that "It was the best thing I ever did.". I heard that over and over in the hundreds of email I received today. A few people warned me about how much busier they are in their retirement.

That sounds good to me. The last thing I want to do is sit in the recliner and watch television. Except for "Madam Secretary", I love that show. Oh and Monday Night Football, Dancing with the Stars, American Pickers, Antique Roadshow, Kentucky Wildcat basketball, The Little Couple, Nova, NBA Basketball, Anything on The History Channel, Real House wives of Atlanta(just kidding). Ut oh, maybe I will spend a little time in the recliner. :) I can't wait.

Check out these fun and beautiful Easter scroll saw patterns from Sue Mey in her latest e-Magazine. The value of this e-Mag is as always, fantastic. You get multiple patterns from a world class pattern designer for the price of one or two patterns. Thanks Sue.

Here is the latest issue of my e-Magazine. A few weeks ago I asked for votes on the question: What would you like to see in future issues of my e-Magazine? The majority vote was for 'Some seasonal patterns plus various other patterns', which is basically what I have been doing, although some issues have had more unrelated patterns included than other issues. So, from now on I will add various patterns to the mix, and try to fulfil some of the specific requests that were stated in the comments section of the poll. Some of the wishes addressed in this issue include a stand-alone shelf unit, a hanging shelf, small patterns that are more complex to cut, 3D items, and specifically a 3D bird, useful objects as opposed to purely decorative, a cross, and a clock. There are also some projects for Easter, Mother’s day, and a handy necktie/belt hanger for Dad.
