The red arrow in the picture above points to the Adaptive setting that I used to get this portrait. Experiment with all the features to get the best pattern from your image. Each photo will need different settings depending on the contrast of the picture.

Rapid Resizer is a commercial online tool to print patterns to any size. It is often used by stained glass and scroll saw artists. There is a monthly fee but Patrick also offers a few free online applications.

One of the free apps is the Free Picture Stencil Maker. It allows you to upload a picture and roughly create a pattern that can be cut on your scroll saw. Notice that I said roughly. This application will get you started but will not always produce a pattern that is ready to cut.

In a scroll saw portrait style pattern you can't have floaters. If you look at the next image you will see the right eye of John Wayne. Look at the highlight in the pupil of the eye. We will be cutting away the blade. If we cut that eye the highlight will be gone. To solve that we need to make a bridge. You can see that in the bottom image.

It is also nice to clean up the small dots that are created. You can see that below also. I redefined the edges of the black to make the cut a little easier to see.

Edited Right Eye

This is what the edited pattern would look like when cut from wood.

So how do you accomplish these edits? You can use almost any graphics program. GIMP is free and works well. You can also just visualize the edits as you cut on the scroll saw. This is easier than it sounds. Just pick out an area and cut away the dark areas making sure you don't leave any floaters.

Not every photo will work as well as another. The photo needs to have good contrast and not be too small of a resolution. You will have to experiment with this application to get good results. The more editing you do on the pattern the better it can look.
