NOTE: My rendered images of the projects can sometimes make them look larger than they are. This box is ~10.125" long, ~7.5" wide, and will hold objects up to 5" tall.

The box is cut from 1/4" thick wood. You can cut the optional lid. The interior walls are also optional if you want an open fretwork design.

This would be an expensive project to cut from a nice hardwood. Most folks are going to use plywood for this project unless it is for something special. Staining plywood can be a little challenging. Here is a YouTube video that shows some tips for staining birch plywood.

Protect your Lungs

AD: It is so easy to overlook the health consequences of breathing the wood dust we produce. Everyone should take precautions when working in the shop. I'll be honest, I sometimes don't do what I preach. I know better but I get in a hurry and don't do what I should. I am trying to do better.

There are times when cleaning the shop that I stir up lots of extra dust. When I empty my dust collector or shop vac or cut MDF, it gets really dusty. For those jobs, I use the GVS Elipse P100 Dust Respirator. I have used a few respirators and this one feels comfortable enough that I will wear it without complaining.

I have owned this unit for a few years and the soft thermoplastic material has held up very well. It is also odorless which is something to consider when buying anything made from this type of material.

They advertise that the replaceable filters can last up to 5 years. Mine are not quite that old but I have not felt the need to replace them.

If you want to try a respirator then I think this is a good low-cost choice. I don't use a respirator when scrolling. I use a mask but the respirator is almost comfortable enough to wear for longer sessions.

I called this a box but it is just a container for whatever you need it for. It is about 7.5" tall and will hold an object up to about 5.5" in diameter.

Second Pattern Today. Cutting Board

This is a simple and useful pattern. This small cutting board is 10.25" long and ~5.5" wide. You want to use a thick board at least 3/4" thick but 1" is better. You want the board to have a little weight to it.

You want to choose a hard, wood that has a dense grain. Maple, cherry, and beech all make nice cutting boards. Walnut will also work but it does tend to show knife marks.

Red oak and ash are poor choices because they have an open grain and will hold food particles.

Oil finishes are best for items that come in contact with food. Mineral oil and raw linseed oil are good choices. The truck is that almost all modern finishes are food safe after they have completely cured. The problem is that many people have grown accustomed to oil finishes and that is what they prefer.

DEWALT Planer, Thickness Planer, 13-Inch, 3 Knife for Larger Cuts, Two Speed 20,000 RPM Motor, Corded (DW735)

I have owned the DeWalt DW735 for several years. It has been a workhorse in my shop. As scroll saw users we use a lot of thin boards. This planer along with a decent band saw gives you the ability to prepare thin boards from rough lumber. That saves a ton of money over the long haul.

About this item

  • Powerful 15-AMP, 20,000 RPM motor (10,000 RPM cutter head speed) handles larger cuts in wider materials with ease
  • Three knife cutter-head delivers 30-percent longer knife life and makes knife change faster and easier
  • Two-speed gear box allows users to change feed speed to optimize cuts per inch at 96 or 179 CPI
  • Fan-assisted chip ejection vacuums chips off of the cutter head and exhausts them out of the machine

This is the end of the daily posts. Keep scrolling for lot's more scrolls saw fun!
