Here in the US, we are only two weeks away from the 4th of July (Independence Day ). I added the eagle decoration with this day in mind, but if you prefer, you can leave it off and just use the box.
The box measures 10.25" in length and is approximately 6.5" wide. You can easily change the depth by cutting more or fewer layers.
How, I select a scroll saw blade for cutting a project.
If you look at the chart below, you will see the blade size number at the top and the suggested wood thickness that the blade will cut efficiently. What this chart does not tell you is how to choose the blade that will cut the project you want to cut. The chart simply says that if you want the most efficient cut, choose the blade in the chart. Efficiency can be important, but only if the blade works on the pattern you have chosen.
Most of the time, I choose the blade based on the pattern and not the thickness/hardness of the wood. There are many times that I choose a #3 blade when cutting 3/4" thick wood. If the pattern has many small interior cuts then the #9 is the most efficient blade to cut 3/4" thick wood, but not for the small interior cuts with tight turns. A #3 blade will cut most 3/4" thick wood; you just have to cut slower. Choose the largest blade that will cut the pattern you have chosen. Sometimes that may mean you use multiple sizes of blades on a pattern.
Selecting the wood for the pattern is also important. If the pattern is very intricate and has small interior cuts, then hard maple may not be the best choice. A softer wood will give the blade an easier time and not wear it out so fast.
Speaking of worn-out blades. Change blades before they are worn out. A worn blade will not give you an efficient cut, and it tends to drift off the pattern line and cause splintering. Scroll saw blades can last anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on several factors. With time, you will feel the difference between a worn blade and a sharp blade.
