Hangman the Game
The origins of Hangman are somewhat mysterious, but the game is believed to have first emerged in Victorian England during the late 19th century. It likely evolved from traditional word games and puzzles, becoming a popular pastime for schoolchildren and families. The basic concept of guessing letters to reveal a hidden word, combined with the drawing of the stick figure, proved to be both simple and engaging. Despite its macabre name, Hangman remains a lighthearted classic that has endured through generations.
I put together a colorful hangman game with animation and speech. Remember that I am a child of the 1050s 1060s, so having a game themed after hanging does not bother me. If it bothers you, then please do not click the link.
The game has close to 400 words in its library, and some of them are probably too difficult for young children. I would consider this a game for ages ten and above. I like playing it and I am a little older than ten.
Here is a hint for playing this game well. The ten most common letters in the English language are:
E A R I O T N S. Guess the letters in that order, and you will be successful more often. You may want to adjust your strategy when you see letter patterns or possible words as you go through the list.
Example: _ _ _T_ ON could be PORTION as a common four-letter(TION) pattern.
Here are a few common letter patterns:
Th – Used in words like "the" and "that".
Sh – Found in words like "ship" and "she".
Ch – As in "church" and "cheese".
Ph – Seen in "phone" or "graph".
Wh – In words like "what" or "when".
Qu – Almost always goes together, like in "quick" or "queen".
ck – Common in words like "back" or "rock".
Ing – A frequent ending, as in "running" or "jumping".
Tion – A popular ending for nouns, like "action" or "nation".
Str – A common consonant cluster, as in "street" or "strong".
Ea – Can be seen in words like "read" and "beach".
Oo – As in "book" or "moon".
Ou – Found in words like "sound" and "house".
