Posture: Not medical advice. Just my opinion:
When sitting at your scroll saw, keep your back straight and your shoulders relaxed. Make sure your chair’s height allows you to look forward at the pattern without tilting your head too far down. I always tilt the rear of the saw up 3 inches or more so I see the pattern better. Adjusting your seat so your elbows are at a comfortable angle can help you avoid straining your arms and wrists. Keep your feet flat on the floor, and take a quick stretch break every so often if you start to feel stiff. Do not hold the workpiece with too much pressure. This will quickly fatigue your hands and arms. Remember to breath. I see scrollers practically stop breathing during difficult cuts.
If you’re standing while working at your scroll saw, it’s all about balance and ease. Position yourself so you’re not leaning too far forward or twisting your body awkwardly. A sturdy, non-slip floor mat can help reduce tension in your legs and back. Just as with sitting, you’ll want to keep your shoulders relaxed and your neck in line with your spine as much as possible, looking straight at the piece you’re cutting.
No matter if you’re sitting or standing, pay attention to what your body is telling you. If something feels strained or sore, take a break, adjust your setup, or tweak your position. Over time, these small habits add up, helping you stay comfortable, cut more accurately, and enjoy your time at the saw. Good posture might take a little time to feel totally natural. When posture comes naturally your time at the saw will be less stressful and more fun.
