My latest toy box build. Rough plans included.

I had a few readers ask me to show my latest toy box build. A couple weeks ago I mentioned that I build every child in our family a toy box when they turn one year old. I always try customize them in a way that the parents will like. In this case I wanted a simple clean design.

This box was built using MDF for the carcass and clear pine for the trim. I assembled it using the Kreg pocket hole system. Pocket holes make a project like this faster and easier. There is no fancy joinery for this project. Just butt joints except the molding was mitered.

Painting the edges of MDF can be a problem. This box did have four edges that were not covered up with trim. If you ever have this you can help the painting by treating the bare edges. First sand the edges with 180 grit sand paper. Then make a mixture of water and wood glue. just add enough glue so the mixture is still watery but yellow. Paint the exposed edges with this mixture. After it dries lightly sand again with the 180 grit until smooth. This will seal the bare edges and the paint will not soak in.

Under the top trim I used off the shelf molding from Home Depot to add a little decoration.
