This Christmas winter scene wall hanging is 12" tall and 10" wide. I used maple and walnut scroll saw blanks from Heritage Wood to cut this fretwork. Their glued up boards were perfect for this large project. I used the 12" X 16" boards. They do a good job of color matching the glue ups so it's hard to tell these are not just wide boards.
There are enough cuts on this piece to keep you busy for a while. It took me about three hours to cut the fretwork. I finished it with spray acrylic. I'll use a saw tooth hanger from Bear Woods to hang it on the wall. See how I shamelessly mentioned two sponsors for this one project. Capitalism at it's finest.
Well I'm about to hit a milestone in my life. On December 1st, I will be 60 years old. There are certain birthdays that seem to stand out more than others. 16, 21, 50 and 60 seem to be transition years. When I was much younger I would have told you that 60 was ancient. Now that I'm here it don't seem so old. :)
I bring this up because I recently had a conversation with a reader about how important it is to have something in your life that you are passionate about. For some it's fishing or golf. For me it's making things. I am a very happy camper when I'm in my shop working on a project or sitting at the computer designing a pattern.
No age seems old when you can wake up each morning looking forward to the day. A hobby can be one part of your life that can keep you active both physically and mentally.
I am a big believer that a hobby can help keep you fulfilled and happier. Even when work is tough or other parts of our lives are not going well you can always retreat to your hobby and find a few minutes to be happy.
