Stickman Baseball Scroll Saw Pattern.

It's almost baseball season and the Stick League is gearing up for another exciting season.  Let's meet a few of the players we will be watching on the diamond this season.
 Chuck "The Curve" Ball
This is Chuck's 2nd year in the league. His rookie season had it's ups and downs. No one could touch his wicked curve ball but the commissioner fined him $30,000 for suspicion of doctoring the ball. The umpire found a sticky foreign substance on the ball. Chuck insisted it was just wood glue from his foot being glued to his base.

Jack Bench
Bench is is trying to break the record for most consecutive games played in the Stick League. He has not missed a game in 12 seasons. Jack's famous father, Johnny told reporters that he attributes strong dovetail joints as the reason Jack has been able to stay healthy through so many seasons.

Willie "Biscuit" Joiner
Willie was the first Stick League players to hit .400 for a season. He was the league MVP last season and signed a multi year mega million dollar contract in the off season. There is also rumor that he signed the most lucrative endorsement contract in the history of sports. Details are not public but it is reported that Willie signed a 10 year endorsement contract with Diamond Brand Toothpick for $200 million dollars. When he was asked about the deal he just smiled and said "Care for a toothpick?"

Chief "Blind" Dovetail
Chief Dovetail calls'em like he sees'em. The Chief has been an umpire for 62 years. Unfortunately his eyesight has not been so good for that last 20 years or so. Last week he called the mascot out at second during the seventh inning stretch. He was clearly safe.

 Quick Scroll Saw Blade Discussion:

By far the most common email I receive is about scroll saw blades. New scrollers are often overwhelmed with the number of choices of blades. There are several styles of blades. Each blade style has specifications for the number of teeth per inch(TPI), thickness, width etc. It's just downright confusing.

The good news is that I can make it very simple for you. If you are just getting started and plan to make projects like you see here on my blog then this is all you need.

Probably 95% of all the 2,500 plus patterns in my catalog can be cut with just a couple of blades.

Order a supply of #3 reverse tooth blades and #5 reverse tooth blades. That's it. This will easily get you started. You could probably enjoy the hobby for years and never use any other blades.

Throw the charts out. Charts are for engineers. You choose a blade based on the pattern. A chart will tell you what blade will be the most efficient at cutting a particular thickness and density of wood. That's fine but we are not always looking for efficiency. We are often more concerned with the ability of the blade to make a tight turn or be able to get into a very small interior cut.

I will often use a very small blade even when I am cutting thicker wood. The charts will tell you that this is not very efficient. Don't care. I just want to be able to cut the pattern. If I need a #1 blade to get into a small interior cut then that's what I use. True, I may have to cut much slower than if I used a larger blade but I am not a production cutter so I have no problem going slow.

Buy a high quality brand of blade. You will actually spend less if you buy high quality blades. They last longer so the value is better.

All the other blades have their purpose. You will eventually want or need to use other blades. Add them to your supply as you need them.

That's pretty much all you need to know to get started. I hope this takes some of the confusion out of getting started.
