Time to start getting ready for the Halloween season. This layered witch is ten inches long. She is cut from 1/4" thick wood.
This is just a heads up about buying patterns on Etsy. This is primarily directed at folks who are looking for files to cut on laser cutters. Many of the files are sold by people who do not have permission to sell the copyrighted patterns. Many of my free patterns are available on Etsy being sold by people who do not have my permission. I hate to see buyers buy a pattern when it is free in my catalog.
I am not complaining for myself. If I leave my iPhone laying on the car seat in the parking lot at the mall with the windows down, there is a good chance it will walk away. That is kind of the situation for my patterns. All you have to do is click a button and you have the file. Because I make it so easy I know I am risking theft. I can live with that risk for myself. My income does not come from the patterns, it comes from other sources so I am not terribly harmed financially when they are stolen.
I do my best to have the patterns taken down when they end up on a site like Etsy. It is more difficult than you would expect. I just take the time because I hate to see my patterns used in a scam.
I have no data to back up what I am about to say but my guess is that 90% of the patterns sold on Etsy for laser cutters are sold illegally. When you see large collections of files available as a group they are just files that have been scrapped from the web and repackaged.
I spent several hours yesterday in conversation with two Etsy sellers who were selling my patterns in collections. One has already taken the patterns down and the other seems to be cooperating but it will take me two or three more hours of work to give him all the file names to be removed.
The biggest issue in all of this for me is that Etsy has to know that these large collections are sketchy and they need to have more safeguards in place. They cater to craftsmen and women and they should put out the effort to protect the people who make their site profitable. I know it's difficult but it is important.
