Friday Night Lights: Six Football Patterns for the Season

There comes a point near the end of summer when the weather begins to turn. The mornings feel a little different, the scent of freshly cut grass hangs in the air, and stadium lights begin glowing against the evening sky.

Friday night lights have a way of making an ordinary football field feel like the center of the world. For a few hours, a kid can become the hero of his team—and families, friends, and entire communities can share in the moment from a row of aluminum bleachers.

Steve's Impact Reached Many People & Places

Steve had a way of telling the truth about the work—and about himself—that built a quiet trust between him and his readers. His observations were often simple and offered with humor, yet they carried a gentle invitation: to look honestly at our own work, accept where we were, and keep going.

Steve understood that growth required patience, perseverance, humility, and practice. Somehow, he tucked those lessons into each blog post and pattern without ever making them feel like lessons at all.

What Steve meant to a Canadian Guy

"Steve was my first point of contact when I was beginning in this craft. His honesty and integrity were on full display every time I got to hear Steve’s thoughts and comments. I would like to thank him for all he gave to me. Through his words I learned and became more confident in his projects. Never asking for anything but, “ don’t sell my patterns “lol. He became my trusted source and although we never met…a trusted friend. Steve had no way of knowing how much he influenced me and how his words still echo in my mind today. With tears in my eyes I still can’t believe my friend, who I never met, is really gone.

I have received lots of praise for projects that Steve designed. He taught me patience and perseverance, both things I have taught my son as Steve taught me. Lots of Steve’s projects have been donated to people and organizations or charities free of charge as I never felt charging them was right. I think Steve would have liked that. Which Steve Good Pattern Challenged You Most?

With more than 5,000 patterns in the Scroll Saw Workshop collection, Steve created something for nearly every kind of scroller. Puzzles, clocks, keychains, portraits, animals, seasonal projects—and just about everything in between.

Some patterns could be finished in an afternoon. Others tested our patience, sharpened our skills, and made us wonder whether we had taken on more than we could handle. Those are often the projects we remember most.

For an upcoming community feature, we want to hear about the most difficult Steve Good pattern you have ever cut.

When I was just starting my scroll saw journey I found the scrollsaw workshop blog and began to explore the vast library of patterns. Over the years I've learned how to cut more advanced patterns and have even entered a few pieces in the local county exhibition (and won first place!). I did this this segmented rose pattern in 2024 for my wife and decided to try to do it 3d and as an oval box just to make it a little more difficult.

Steve it seems to me , was always giving, scroll saw patterns of course, but of himself. And so even though I never actually met him, I did grow to know him in a wonderful way. What I have been able to make, is entirely thanks to Steve.

I've used many of Steve's patterns over the years and made a lot of kids happy. I give all of my toys away. Was nice to have a resource that allows me to do so. A Pattern That Cost Nothing

We live in a world where subscriptions have begun to replace ownership and nearly everything sits behind a paywall. Steve Good chose a different way. He understood that making a pattern free did not make it less valuable. Sometimes, it gave that pattern the opportunity to become far more valuable than anyone could have imagined. Steve could not have known everywhere his patterns would go or everything they would accomplish, but somehow he understood that their value extended far beyond the finished piece coming off the scroll saw. Todd’s story is a beautiful example of that truth. A pattern that cost him nothing became something you could never put a price on.

In a Time of Need - Todd Martin

"About 10 years ago, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job. It took several months to find another position, and during that time, unemployment benefits weren’t enough to cover all of our bills and financial obligations.

I was fairly new to the Scroll Saw Workshop at the time and happened to come across the little Nativity box Steve had designed. It was fall, Christmas was just around the corner, and I decided to give it a try.

I went out to my shop, made six of the Nativity boxes, and listed them on Etsy. To my surprise, they sold within two days. So I made six more—and those sold quickly too. I continued making and selling those boxes while I searched for work.

The money I earned from those Nativity boxes was enough to make up the difference between my unemployment benefits and the bills we needed to pay. Something that may have seemed like a simple scroll saw pattern ended up helping keep my family afloat during one of the most difficult periods of our lives.

At the time, I wrote Steve an email to thank him for everything he did and to share my story. I never expected to hear back. I figured he probably received hundreds of emails and simply wouldn’t have the time to respond.

To my surprise, the very next day I received an email from Steve. He thanked me for sharing my story and offered some kind and encouraging words to keep going. I’ve never forgotten that.

Even after all these years, I’m still incredibly grateful for Steve and the Scroll Saw Workshop. What he created and so freely shared became much more than a woodworking pattern for me. At a time when my family really needed some help, it gave me a way to use my hands, earn some extra money, and get us through a difficult season.

I will always be thankful for that."

Hello Scrollsaw Workshop! 

Julia Dinesen here from Bear Woods Supply Company. After a lot of talk and planning with Steve Good's wonderful family, Bear Woods will be facilitating the continuation of Steve's blog. With this, it is my privilege to share my family's story and what Steve Good, the Scroll Saw Workshop, and the scroll saw community mean to us. 

Bear Woods started in 1987, but my family's journey with the company and the scroll saw began in 2015. My dad, coincidentally also named Stephen, was looking for a new business venture. Our family had walked through a hard few years and he was ready for something new. The couple who had run Bear Woods since 1987 was looking to retire, and the fit was perfect. Well, except for the little fact that we knew nothing about woodworking. Or literally any of the products. But hey, it can't be that hard to learn, right? 

The picture below shows our family in 2016. My siblings, from left to right, are Elijah, Evalyn, and Isaac. I was just fourteen at the time, and our little Evalyn only six! The second photo is our family all grown up, Christmas 2025. Fun fact, my first real job was editing the website listings for boxes of dowel rods!

Well, it turns out, when you have quite literally thousands of products, there is a lot to learn. And learn we did. Most things weren't too hard to figure out. 2" x 2" cube? Those stack. They are made out of hard maple. Little wood turned trees? Not sure what they are being used for, but that's straight forward enough. Clock hands? Clock mechanisms? Tell me your clock face diameter and dial thickness and we can advise your socks off. Then my dad, Stephen, encountered Pegas Scroll Saw Blades on the shelves of his new barn-turned-warehouse. 

Bear Woods Family - The Family History of Bear Woods:

If you've been around the Bear Woods ecosystem, you've heard us talk (endlessly) about Pegas blades (because they are awesome). But, in 2015, my dad didn't know what they were for. His first thought was that they were some kind of jigsaw blade. (I'll pause to let you laugh for a moment.) He had never seen a scroll saw before. He quickly realized they weren't jigsaw blades, but that still left a lot of questions. The founder of Bear Woods Supply told my dad these Pegas blades are great, originally for making jewelry. So he looked for some teaching material to help him figure out what these blades can do and found this very blog, run by the one and only, the master himself, Steve Good. 

My dad called, and Steve picked up. They chatted, and my dad sent him some Pegas blades to try. At this point, Steve had heard of Pegas and had not yet tried them. Steve called back and said the Pegas blades are great. He told people about them, on this very blog, and almost overnight the community wanted to try Pegas blades -  because Steve said so. Wow. We had never worked with an "influencer" before.  But Steve wasn't that - he was passionate about his work and the community — having quality tools and supplies mattered to Steve.

Stephen and Steve became good friends. So many times my dad, Stephen, would tell me he just got off the phone with Steve. Talking about family, scrolling, the blog. Steve’s readers meant everything to him. The emails, the comments, the opportunity to make custom ornaments - it all mattered to Steve.  He was as genuine as they come. He was excited about the new things coming - it mattered to him that the scroll saw community grows and remains vibrant. Millions of downloads, endless email responses, and a genuine commitment to helping all of us learn and grow with the most accessible, versatile power tool: the scroll saw.

In high school shop class my brother Isaac heard about the scroll saw for the first time. Starting with some of Steve's basic patterns and working his way up, my brother spent countless hours on first a cheap second hand saw and then the shiny new Pegas when it came out. Steve was an inspiration and Isaac has become an incredible woodworker in his own right. My grandma still has the Jesus fish my little sister scrolled when she was only eight years old sitting on her bookcase, given to my grandpa not long before he passed. One of Steve's patterns.

So, what now. Well, we want to continue this blog, Steve's legacy, in a way that honours him - by talking all things scroll saw: blog posts, patterns new and old, tool reviews and suggestions, tips & tricks & how-to's.

The word our team is focusing on is stewardship. As many of you know, Steve was a strong Christian. Biblically, stewardship is being entrusted with the continuation and growth of something you have not necessarily earned. The heart of the Scrollsaw Workshop is Steve and his love of the scroll saw and people in this community. Our goal is to continue the blog in a way that reflects the passion and love Steve had for the scroll saw and woodworking community. Our heart is to continue and build upon his legacy and give back to the community.

My family's story, Bear Woods's story, Steve Good's story, is why carrying on the Scroll Saw Workshop with the utmost integrity and value is an honour we will steward wisely. Everyone who has ever read Steve's blog, learned from him, cut one of his patterns, is part of a tapestry of connection and a beautiful craft. Working with our hands is important. Hobbies are important. Helping people learn and grow and love something that brings them joy—for no other reason than to share knowledge and one's own love of the craft—is fulfilling. Steve Good lived a life of integrity and passion for his craft. Because of Steve's story, because of what he did for you, for scrollers, and scrollers yet to come, join us in continuing the legacy of a Husband, Father, Friend, Advocate, and a Shining example of what it means to give to the community.

Steve, we miss you, and we hope that you'll be proud.

Steve Good built far more than a collection of scroll saw patterns. Through years of sharing his knowledge freely and showing up faithfully for this community, he created a place where people could learn, make something meaningful, and feel connected to others who loved the craft.

This Workshop carries Steve’s fingerprints and it is our honor and joy to keep it that way.

We recognize our responsibility to preserve what he built, keep his work accessible, and thoughtfully carry it forward. That includes preparing the Workshop for the future of the scroll saw community and improving the technology that supports it, while protecting the familiar heart of the place Steve created.

Before we begin looking ahead, we want to spend time honoring what came before and to do that well, we would love to hear from you!

UPDATE ON OWNERSHIP:

It’s been five months since we lost Steve and I wanted to again thank all of you for your support.  

I am happy to announce that Scrollsaw Workshop will be continuing under the new ownership of Stephen Dinesen, President of Bear Woods Supply. 

Scrollsaw Workshop was a huge part of Steve's life for the last 20 years and your support has meant the world to both Steve and our entire family. In the last months of Steve's life, we discussed what he would want for the future of Scrollsaw Workshop in the case that he wasn't able to continue with the blog. As you all know Steve had a relationship with Stephen and Bear Woods for many years and Stephen was someone that Steve trusted to continue his work, so I feel confident in making this transition knowing that I have Steve's blessing. 

Stephen Dinesen will be taking over Scrollsaw Workshop beginning tomorrow, August 18th, 2026. We have discussed his plans for the blog and it sounds like the future of Scrollsaw Workshop will be in good hands. He is initially hoping to gather stories and comments about Steve and his impact on the community over the years. I think this is a great way to honor his legacy and look forward to hearing all of your stories. 

During the transition, the blog will be updated with new contact information for Stephen and his team. Several followers have mentioned sending photos of various completed projects and I would still love to see those when they're ready!

In Loving Memory

1957 - 2026

Dear Scrollsaw Workshop subscribers, we are heartbroken to let you know that Steve unfortunately suffered another heart attack over the weekend and passed away on Monday, March 2nd, 2026. We were able to be by his side until the end, and we know how much he sincerely appreciated the hundreds and thousands of cards and messages with well wishes and prayers over the past few weeks. He received several handmade gifts that he cherished greatly and had displayed in his room. Every time you cut one of Steve's patterns, please know that you are keeping his memory alive and that he will always be with you. 

The visitation will be held at Scott Funeral Home at 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, IN on Monday, March 9th, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with service to follow. 

In lieu of flowers, we have decided to keep his website up and running for right now, so any donations to Scrollsaw Workshop would be appreciated to help cover costs of running the blog as well as other expenses during this time. Update

This is Steve. Just wanted to let you know that I will

be leaving the hospital today. Unfortunately I won’t be going home. I have to go to a rehab facility for a few weeks so they can get me walking again. I was able to walk four steps yesterday so that was encouraging. Thanks again for all the well wishes you have sent.

Steve's Health Update

Steve's Health Update:

Good morning. Steve is still recovering in the hospital and wanted to send an update to say Thank You for all the cards, gifts, and well wishes that he has received. This week, we should find out what the next steps are in regards to rehabilitation, so we do not yet have an estimated timeframe for when he'll be home, but he is doing well overall and looking forward to being back with you soon.
