The King of the Beasts is 8" X 10". To keep the board strong make sure you cut all the face features first. Then work on the mane. Use the color of your choice for the backer. I am showing him here with a brown backer. I typically use color paper or paint a 1/8" thick sheet if Baltic birch ply. It just depends on how thick it can be to fit in the frame. If you are making your own frame then make it to fit the thickness.

Neiko® 01407A Electronic Digital Caliper
I use my digital calipers all the time in my workshop. I use them to check the diameter of wooden dowels. I check the thickness of boards. Measure the depth of holes. Sometime you just need a bit more accuracy than a ruler can give.
These are not the most expensive calipers you can buy but I have found them to be accurate.

Think Safety
Remember to keep the safety of yourself and others in your work shop in your thoughts at all times. Always wear eye and ear protection. Follow all the manufactures warnings that came with your power tools. If I demonstrate something on this web site that you don't feel is safe, don't do it. Your safety is your responsibility. Fingers are handy things, try to keep all of them.
