This pattern is 14 inches wide. It is 3 layers. There are not that many interior cuts so it is not too difficult of a pattern cut.
When you start dealing with larger boards on the scroll saw they can be more difficult to maneuver around the table. If you typically sit while you cut you may find it easier to stand when cutting lager pieces. That gives you a chance to move your position when to board is hanging over the front of the table.

Choosing which scroll saw blade to use: Forget the rules and charts.
One of the most common emails I receive is about which blade to use for a particular project. It is probably the most confusing subject for someone new to the scroll saw hobby. There are so many different types of blades that knowing what they are all good for is a challenge.
If you are new to the scroll saw I am going to make it easy for you to choose a blade. If you are cutting the types of patterns you see on my blog you can use a #3 or #5 scroll reverse blade for 95% of them.
The #3 and #5 are small enough to get into most interior cuts. The #5 is large enough to cut even thicker woods. The reverse teeth just help reduce the tear-out on the back side of the cut and reduce sanding.
That is really all you need to know to get started. As your experience grows to can experiment with different blades. You may want to cut jig saw puzzles, metal or plastic. These can be done more easily with specialty blades. Add them as you come across the need. Of course there are spiral blades but they are only really useful on portrait style patterns.
Don't make it difficult. Just buy yourself a set of these two blades and start cutting.

Bear Woods Pegas Scroll Saw Blade Giveaway:
In the post above I spoke about choosing scroll saw blades. I was talking about the type of blade but what about the brand. Yes the brand is important. You want a quality blade. Pegas scroll saw blades are made for the highest quality steel. They are sharp and stay sharp longer. Trust me when I say you will feel the difference if you switch from a poor quality blade to the Pegas brand. I use Pegas blades.
Bear Woods has been supplying woodworkers with quality supplies since 1987. That's a long time. They have been in business that long because they treat their customers with respect and they sell quality products. Take a few minutes to see if they have what you need. Dust Deputy Cyclone Dust Separator:
A cyclone dust separator is one of the best tools I added to my work shop. I installed a large cyclone in front of my dust collector and the difference was huge. Most of the larger particles never make it to the dust bag. They end up in an easy to empty garbage can.
It helps keep the filter cleaner longer which keeps the suction stronger longer. Emptying the dust bag is a messy job. I always hated doing it. Because of that I would let it over fill and I had a real mess when it finally had to be done. Now I just keep the garbage can empty by pouring it into a large trash bag. It only takes seconds and is a much cleaner job.
The Dust Deputy Cyclone has been around for a while and is great when hooked up to a shop vac. If your primary dust collector is a shop vac then this product is worth every penny.
