My wife had a request. Our master bath has a seahorse theme. She wanted a clock that was large enough to be a wall clock and match the theme. I had a 6" diameter clock insert from Bear Woods that needed a home so I got started. It's a simple project but simple is often best.
I cut this clock from 3/4" thick MDF. MDF is heavy but it takes paint well so it was a good choice. One tip is to sand the surface well before you apply the paint. The sanded surface will take the paint much better.
When you cut the hole for the insert it is best to undercut it slightly and sand to a good fit.

One of the best values I have in my shop is my Ryobi spindle sander. I paid around $100 for it several years ago and it still works great. I use it a lot. Unfortunately, it is no longer available.
I have researched these machines and this WEN spindle sander gets very good reviews. It sells on Amazon for just over $100. I have many sanding options in my shop and some of them are very expensive. These spindle sanders do a lot of work for not much cost.
I used my spindle sander for this project today to get a perfect fit for the clock insert. This tool made getting that perfect fit easy.
