Mother and Child Deep Relief Segmentation Scroll Saw Pattern.

Mother and Child Segmentation art. The sculpture stands 9.25" tall and is 5.5" wide. It features a slightly deeper relief than typical segmentation projects to give it more depth.

This would make a nice gift for a new mother.

By the way. just look at how beautiful the cherry wood is. I love cherry and for a sculptural piece like this it is perfect.

This segmentation project was cut from one-inch thick cherry. After cutting all the pieces I thickness sanded the background pieces thinner to give the mother and child more definition. Only the center pieces are contoured.

What is segmentation? We get new people here on the blog all the time and many of them may not know the definition of segmentation as it applies to the scroll saw. There is also often confusion between segmentation and intarsia.

To make a segmentation project, we use a pattern that has interconnecting lines that form shapes. Similar to a stained glass pattern. The pattern is applied to a single board and the pieces are cut out. Then the pieces are contoured by sanding and reassembled on a backer board. Ocasionally the pieces will be painted to add color. This painting is usually done with a thin wash of paint so the grain still show through.

Intarsia is similar except the individual pieces are cut from different species of wood. The different species are selected for their color and grain. When all the pieces are glued back together you have a multi-colored work of art.

The pattern book contains complete pictorial instructions.

Limited Time Offer from Heritage Wood Specialties:

Hey, guys, this is a good deal. My friend Tim over at Heritage Wood Specialties contacted me with an offer to pass along to my readers. From now until the end of the month they are offering free shipping on all orders. If you order wood online you know that free shipping is a big saving. Wood is heavy and the cost of shipping can be high. The offer begins 1/11/2019. When it is available you will see it on their main page. Free shipping applies to lower 48 states only.

Heritage offers one of my favorite products. They sell what they call "Scroll Saw Blanks". These are glued up boards in different thicknesses with sizes up to 12" X 20". These boards give you the width you need for large projects and the thicknesses that are so difficult to find locally.

Tim and the guys do a great job of color matching the boards so the glue ups almost look like one wide board. I use these Scroll Saw Blanks all the time and love them.

They also offer a wide selection of other products including Baltic Birch Plywood.

Even if you don't have a project on the bench right now this is a good time to stock up on boards for that next project.

Personalized Signature Coins:

Don't forget to order your signature coins. These are the perfect way to sign your work. Permanently laser engraved and ready to inlay into your project. At just over $1 per coin, you can add an inexpensive yet beautiful signature to that special project. Your work will be handed down from generation to generation. Make sure your great, great grandchild knows who made that treasured gift for them.
$12 per sheet of 12 coins plus $3.50 shipping
Inlay with a 1" Forstner Bit.
The perfect way to sign your work.
