Our family enjoys scented candles. The candles often come in beautiful glass containers. Add an attractive fretwork holder and you have a nice centerpiece.
The candle holder has two bevel cut pockets that hold up to a four-inch candle.
The holder is 10.25 inches long and 5.25 inches deep. I cut it from 1/2" thick wood.
As always we want to do test cuts for the beveled pockets. Use a scrap of the same wood and the same blade you plan to cut the project wit to make the test cuts. I normally start out at 3 degrees and adjust from there. I ended up using the setting for the plug on the left in the picture. Keep in mind that the test picture above is upside down showing how deep the pockets will be. You want to leave enough wood inside the pocket to have some glue surface. The cut on the right was too deep and would have been difficult to glue.
On the Fly Pattern Edits:
Not every pattern cuts well in all woods. A pattern with very fine detail and thin areas may cut fine in maple but will easily break if you tried to cut it in red oak. The gran in red oak is just too open.
When I am cutting a pattern I try to look ahead and see where there may be trouble spots. If you look at the image above you will see where I predicted the potential for the wood to break. Where the curl wrapped back around on itself the wood would have become very thin and fragile.
I made the decision to do an on the fly pattern edit. This just means that I stopped the curl early to leave more thickness. I left a little more meat to add strength.
Don't be afraid to change the pattern as you cut if you think it makes the pattern look better or it prevents problems. Most of the times these edits will never be noticed.
