Rough Lumber to Scroll Saw Ready Boards:
One of the first problems new scrollers need to overcome is where to get scroll saw ready boards. By scroll saw ready I just mean boards that are the right size and thickness for the projects you want to cut.
In the scroll saw hobby we use a lot of thin boards. 1/4" and 1/2" thicknesses are common. As you have probably discovered, buying boards in these thicknesses can be difficult. The big box stores seldom carry thin thickness boards and the ones they do carry are not that desirable.
Most scrollers resort to buying their scroll saw ready boards online. You can find what you need but the price can be shocking especially once you add the shipping charges.
The most economical option is to mill your own scroll saw ready boards. In this video, I will take a rough Peruvian Walnut board and mill it to several smaller boards in the thicknesses I use on the scroll saw.
This video is not exactly a tutorial. I don't talk much about technique. It is a demonstration of what it takes in tools, time and money to mill your own boards.
It can take time to build out your workshop with the tools needed to do what I do in this video. You can get started with a smaller set of power tools and add more as time and money permit. I just wanted to give you a look at what it takes and how much money you can save after the initial investment in tools.
If you are interested in the band saw I use in the video above it is a Rikon 14". It is the model 10-325 but no longer available. The Rikon 10-326 replaced it a while ago. The upgraded 10-326 gets good reviews and is generally considered superior to the older 10-325.
With a decent resaw blade in this saw it handles resawing wide boards with ease. The board in the video is nearly 11 inches wide and the Rikon sliced through it without a hiccup.
I have owned the Rikon band saw for a few years and it has been problem free. I have replaced the blade a couple of times and other than general adjustments and cleaning no other attention has been required.
If you are looking to move up from a benchtop band saw I think the Rikon is a good choice.
