I ran across this quote on the internet and thought it would make a nice scroll saw pattern. The United States had 1.3 million active-duty and 865,000 reserve troops in 2017. Just about every family has someone close to them serving in the military.
They are soldiers but they are also husbands, wives, sons, and daughters. Many of them are stationed away from their loved ones and are missed every day. Each one of these soldiers means the world to their loved ones.
Relief Cutting Visualization Tool:
Some people have an easier time visualizing this concept than others. It just depends on how your mind's eyes see spacial concepts.
After I posted Terry Smith's outstanding relief cut projects I received a few emails asking "How do you know which way the piece will move when cutting at an angle for relief cuts?"
I can either talk about how it works or I can show you a quick tool so you never have to try and remember this again.
In the picture above I have a board with four holes drilled in it. Above the holes are two different letter designations. CC and C. CC is Counterclockwise and of course, C is Clockwise. Above the letter designations are lines that represent the tilt of the blade. This was done on a tilting head scroll saw. If you have a tilting table scroll saw your lines may be easier to understand if they represent the table.
I made four small circle cuts. The cuts were in the direction of the arrows. The blade was tilted either left or right. This was 1/2" thick wood and I set the angle to 3 degrees. The measurements are only important for the amount of relief you get. If you set the angle too small the pieces will fall out. See the last image below to understand the importance of the angle. Once you have made all four cuts then glue the wedges in place and you have a guide for your next relief project.
This image shows the difference in a tilting head and a tilting table. Just make your tool with whatever designations you need to remember how to set the saw up on your next relief project.

The above image shows the concept of relief cutting. When you make a cut with a blade, a small amount of wood is removed. This is called the kerf. When the kerf is cut at an angle the piece produced makes a wedge shape. If the angle is large enough the top of the wedge will be wider than the bottom of the wedge. When you push the wedge in the direction of the small end it will wedge in place.
Some of you are going to ask "why do I need a tool?". If you are able to see the concept in your head then you do not need a tool to help remind you in the future. The cut piece is always going to wedge in place when pushed in the direction of the smaller end. For some that is obvious for others it's easier to have a visual reminder.
