This tissue box surround has 19 different decorative panels so you can use the one that appeals to you. It is designed to cover the small tissue boxes.
The core of the surround is 1/4" thick and the decorative panels are 1/8" thick. The joinery is simple butt joints. When I am working with this wood and butt joints I use CA glue and spray activator. That eliminates the need for clamps.
The design I chose for the prototype seen here is in the style of Japanese Kumiko. I like the geometric shapes of the style but I included options if you are not a fan. There are also blank panels so you can design your own.

Experts?
We live in a time when anyone can get online and give information that hundreds if not thousands of people will consume. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Blogger are just a few places where "experts" can post and be seen.
That is a wonderful use of technology most of the time. I have heard it said that an expert is just someone who knows one more thing that you do.
I encourage you to seek out information about the hobby. Just understand that there is seldom just one way to do something. Even things as simple as applying a pattern to a piece of wood has several methods.
Don't assume that just because I or anyone else shows you a technique that it is the best technique for you. This is especially important when you are just getting started. Experiment until you find what is comfortable for you. I do my best to demonstrate what I think is a method that will work for most people. Most people are not all people.
The best expert that you can learn from is yourself. If you are having trouble with a technique then take the time to analyze what is going wrong. When you figure out something on your own it sticks.
The one area where having so many "experts" can be a problem is when safety is involved. You will see many, many times when safety procedures are not followed. My self included.
It is never okay to cut on the scroll saw without wearing a dust mask. If the noise level requires hearing protection then you should wear hearing protection. You should always read the manufacturers manual for your tools. Follow their safety advice.
I am going to get real here for a minute. There are times when you will do something that is not considered the safest technique. Never make this decision because you are in a hurry or tired. If you decide to push the safety limits then it better be a well thought out decision.
Every time that I have been hurt in the shop I was either in a hurry or tired.
The moral of the story is that experts are a dime a dozen. Become your own expert. Take the time to study your craft. Trial and error is a valid method to learn from. Take advice from others but be willing to try alternative techniques. Invent your own techniques.
