The uniqueness of this box is the half tube wall and the character of the wood used. The tube is a glue up of several segments. The segments are then sanded to a smooth finish. The length of the box is determined by the thickness of the board you cut the tube segments from. My board was a little over one inch thick so I ended up with a length of 5 1/2". That is about the length you should shoot for, to give the box the best proportions.
When you look at the pattern you will notice that I don't give a length for the lid. That dimension is determined by the length of the glued up segments. You will measure the segmented glue up to determine the length of the lid.
The lid pivots on a 1/4" diameter wooden dowel. Remember that the drilled holes in the side walls need to be slightly larger than the 1/4" dowel. The larger holes allow the lid to pivot without binding.
The dowels are glued into the holes drilled in the side of the lid. All these holes need to be measured and drilled accurately to the lid works smoothly.
The star of this box is the spalted maple wall. Try to find some very nicely figured wood if possible. If you don't have that available then use nicely contrasting colors like maple and walnut. If you decide to go with a single species of wood then use something with nice figures to give the box character.
USB Catalog Update:
I am continuing to work on getting the USB catalog orders shipped as quickly as possible. So far so good. I am getting most orders turned around in four days or less. It is very time intensive to burn the USB drives with the 5,275 files each.
I invested in a USB drive duplicator which was exactly what I needed to speed this process up. In these duplicators, the critical part is the software. The one I bought came with software that did not work correctly. It was not getting all the files copied. I am very lucky that my daughter's husband is a fantastic programmer. He was able to write code to sequentially write to each drive unattended.
I load the duplicator and go about my business. Because I am having to use USB 2.0 drives the copy process is slow. Ten drives take about three hours to copy all the files to each drive. That was rough when I was having to do them one at a time.
I now have enough drives to cover all the orders. I will be getting all the invoices out today. If you have an order in the queue you should already have the invoice or get it today. Once I receive payment from the invoice I am sending the USB Catalog out within two business days. Next shipments will be Monday.
