This gag retirement clock is eight inches in diameter. It requires a quartz clock movement that fits a 1/2" dial. I just used 1/2" thick Baltic birch plywood for the dial. No reason to get fancy with the wood on a project like this.
I used 3 3/8" hands for the clock.
The only real challenge with this pattern is cutting the circle accurately. Remember to establish a pivot finger. You will reestablish the pivot point several times during the cut. Just go slow and follow the line. You can always do some sanding if you need to touch up bad areas.
If you want a refresher of cutting circles then visit my Scroll Saw School Video Page. The videos are getting pretty hold but the information is still good.
I'm losing it!
I retired from my career about three years ago after 37 years with the same company. I have loved every minute of retirement but there are some weird things that happen.
Most days the clock is meaningless. Until my retirement, I lived my life by the clock. Time to get up, time to be at work, time for a meeting, time for lunch, time for another meeting, time to go home(hopefully), time for dinner and time to go to bed. Shower and repeat. I looked at the clock several times an hour.
I have days now where I have no idea what day of the week it is. I know that sounds crazy and maybe it is but I have to ask my wife if it's trash day. :)
Even the time of day has less meaning. My dog knows that I am supposed to take her for a walk at 3pm. I'll look up and here she comes. That will be the first time I have looked at the clock since I got out of bed. By the way, she is always within half an hour of 3pm every day of letting me know it's time to go. My dog has a better sense of time than I do.
I'm not complaining. It's wonderful to have the freedom but it still feels strange.
I'm lucky because I have this business to keep me busy. I don't cope with boredom very well. With this blog, I always have work to do. The time of day that I do this work just makes no difference.
Maximize Your Profits on the Scroll Saw: Stack Cutting Fundamentals.
The technique of stack cutting is very important even if you don't plan to sell your projects. If you do sell your work then stack cutting is critical. This video talks about the fundamentals of stack cutting on the scroll saw.
I get new subscribers on the blog every day. Many of them are just discovering the hobby and have never seen some of the techniques us old timers use all the time. I recently received a couple of emails asking me to explain the "whys and hows" of stack cutting on the scroll saw. Even if you have been around a while you may find something useful in the video. It's only a bit over eight minutes long.
Keep in mind that there are multiple ways to do almost everything we do on the scroll saw. I do show a few different techniques in the video. I am not trying to show every possible technique. If you have other methods that you prefer then, by all means, use those techniques. This video is mostly intended for those people just getting started and need a jump start.
