Fifteen-inch wide welcome sign. This is a large welcome sign. You will probably have to glue up a board to have the width you need. I am showing the sign with the backer board painted.
Signs like this that will be hung outside need good protection from moisture and ultraviolet light. Moisture causes rot and UV light bleaches out the natural color of the wood. The best outdoor protection is paint. If you want the natural beauty of the wood to show then you need a spar urethane finish.(Exterior Urethane)
Exterior urethanes give good protection but often need multiple coats to be effective. Even with several coats of exterior urethane, the finish will eventually cloud up. You may get three years before this start to happen. You can either accept the weathered look or add more exterior urethane to add back the gloss.
If you paint the backer board then I would recommend adding some screws through the back to help hold the sign to the backer board. Trying to glue the sign to a painted backer board is not very secure.
If you really want the sign to last a long time you can coat the piece with epoxy sealer. After the epoxy cures, you can then give it a few coats of Exterior urethane for UV protection. That is a lot of work and expensive but if you ever need that kind of protection that is the technique that works.
Pneumatic Lift for the Seyco Scroll Saw by Paul Smith:
I have mentioned in the past that I am always watching YouTube for new scroll saw related videos. This one was posted on the 12th and I think it shows a cool idea. According to the description, Paul Smith is a 92 year young gentleman who likes to stay busy in his shop.
Paul built a pneumatic lift system for the upper arm of his Seyco scroll saw. The system is powered by a low-PSI air system and is actuated by a button on the floor. Yes, this might be overkill for some folks but if you have strength or upper mobility problems then this could be a real help.
I don't have any further information on this system. If you want to learn more then leave a comment in the comment section of the video and hopefully, they will read it.
Signature Coin Tip from Delvaughn Willis:
I received an email today with a handy tip. If you have purchased my Signature Coins you know that you have to drill a one-inch hole to inlay the coin. The hole depth needs to be the same as the thickness of the coin so it sets flush. It does not have to be perfect but it should be close.
I always use one of the coins to set the drill press depth stop. That works but it takes time and you have to set it up every time. Delvaughn has a simple and mostly permanent method.
He takes a fine point marker and uses one of the coins to mark the forstner bit. He sets the marker on top of the coin and turns the bit by hand marking all the way around the bit. Make sure the brad point is buried when you make the mark.
All he has to do is drill down to the line and he is ready to inlay the coin. Nice and easy.
Thanks, Delvaughn.
