There are 51 patterns in this book. All 50 states and one blank so you can add your own text. You can add your family name, town, etc.. There is one pattern per page that is eight inches wide. If you want the pattern larger then use the Poster print feature of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.
Using the poster print feature of Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, I enlarged the pattern by 150%. It printed on four sheets and measures a little over 12 inches across.
How fast should I run my scroll saw?
I get this question all the time. The quick answer is to run the machine as fast as possible while you can still control the cut. I am talking about the speed that the saw is running, not how fast you push the wood into the blade.
So, when do you need to slow the speed down?
1. If the wood is thin or soft you may need to slow the speed down so you can stay in control of the cut. 1/8" thick wood has very little resistance to the blade. It is easy to let the blade run away from you when there is no resistance. If you see you are losing control then slow it down. Normally between 50 and 60% of full speed will work fine for very thin wood.
2. If the machine starts to vibrate excessively at high speed then back the speed down until you come to a compromise between vibration and speed. Most scroll saws I have used have what I call a sweet spot. Somewhere around 90% of full speed will give the least vibration without having to slow down too much. Every saw will have its own sweet spot.
3. If you are having a problem with the edge of the wood scorching from heat build-up, slowing the saw may help. Blue painters tape will usually solve the problem and you won't have to slow down.
4. When you are cutting material other than wood, you may need to slow down. If plastic starts to fuse back together at the cut line then slow down and see if it helps. When I am cutting metal I normally set the saw at its sweet spot but every once in a while I will slow down the saw to get a cleaner cut.
There are always times when none of the rules apply. Some times you just need to experiment and see what works best for you. There are no absolute answers that will fit every situation. Part of the fun of being a craftsman is developing your own techniques. If it works for you then go for it. Just don't get boxed into never trying other techniques.
Personalized Christmas Ornament Patterns:
I am still making good progress on ornament patterns. I should be able to get caught up today. If you have orders in the queue, keep your eye on your email inbox.
The price is $1 per name with a 5 name minimum. I keep the price as low as possible
because I want everyone to have a chance to make these ornaments for family and friends.
You only pay after you have received the order and are
100% satisfied with the patterns. Invoice included with
the pattern email. Pay by credit card(secure Paypal), check, or cash.
The patterns will be emailed to you after they are completed.
Please allow up to a week for delivery.
You can use last names on the ornaments if you like but remember that the more letters the more
difficult they are to cut. Ten letters and up gets pretty small. If you need to you can enlarge the patterns by 10% to make the interior cuts larger. No special characters are supported. I can get a hyphen in there but it looks odd. It has to connect the two letters so it does not just fall out.
