Rumor has it that there are labor issues in the North Pole. Paparazzi have caught Santa testing new transportation for this season's delivery. You might want to get your Christmas list sent in early this year.
There is quite a bit of veining in this pattern. For a pattern like this, you want to avoid wood species like Red Oak. Red Oak likes to split along the large open grain. You want something with a close grain. I used maple and it held up well to the veining. A pattern like this could also be cut from Baltic birch plywood.
I added a backer board and painted it red. The backer board is optional. I just added it to get a better contrast of the cutouts. You can decide if it needs the backer board once you complete the cut. I had a couple of areas where I allowed the backer board to show around the edges. These should be sanded away for a clean look. The backer board is designed to be 3/100th of an inch smaller than the truck. Just stay on the line and it should be fine.
Cutting Straight Line on a Scroll Saw: Basic Tutorial
Click to Watch the Video
This is a basics video. Every week I have new subscribers who are just starting with the scroll saw. I get an email from them asking questions about basic techniques. Most of the time it is easier for me to point them to one of my older tutorial videos.
This question came up a few times this week so I thought I would mention it in a post. The questions are usually something like, "Why does my scroll saw cut crooked?".
If you have been cutting for a while you already know the answer but if you are new then this video will help explain the reason and offer suggestions to help.
Personalized Christmas Ornament Patterns:
I am still making good progress on ornament patterns. I should be able to get caught up today. If you have orders in the queue, keep your eye on your email inbox.
The price is $1 per name with a 5 name minimum. I keep the price as low as possible
because I want everyone to have a chance to make these ornaments for family and friends.
You only pay after you have received the order and are
100% satisfied with the patterns. Invoice included with
the pattern email. Pay by credit card(secure Paypal), check, or cash.
The patterns will be emailed to you after they are completed.
Please allow up to a week for delivery.
You can use last names on the ornaments if you like but remember that the more letters the more
difficult they are to cut. Ten letters and up gets pretty small. If you need to you can enlarge the patterns by 10% to make the interior cuts larger. No special characters are supported. I can get a hyphen in there but it looks odd. It has to connect the two letters so it does not just fall out.

Delta Power Tools 40-694 20 In. Variable Speed Scroll Saw
Well, the Amazon price is down again on the Delta 40-694 scroll saw. It is not back to its all-time low but $352.79 is not a bad price for this saw. I doubt we will see the $299 again before Christmas. I keep watching but they will probably wait until the first of the year.
