I thought it was time for a spring project. This project is cut from 1/2" thick and 1/4" thick wood. I did not have any 1/2" plywood available so I used a panel I had from Home Depot. The plywood will be more durable especially if you decide to use it outside.
The box is ten inches tall and nineteen inches long.
The ears and box bottom are 1/4" thick
The box is assembled with box joints. The box bottom is glued and nailed in place. Make sure you use a waterproof glue like Titebond II if you plan to set it outside. You should also paint the box with exterior paint.
The head and tail are slot and tab assembled, The legs are position accurately with two wooden dowels in each leg. This makes sure they set in the correct position.
This picture will give you the scale of the planter. It is probably going to hold one or two plants. You may also want to drill some weep holes in the bottom.
Where are the Disney Character and Harley Davidson LOGO scroll saw Patterns?
Sample from Pinterest
There is not a week that goes by when I don't get a request for a pattern of a Disney character, Harley Davidson logo, etc.. I would absolutely love to do those patterns but I can't. Almost everything is either copyrighted or trademarked and requires a license to use. The licenses are extremely expensive and difficult to get.
Since 2007 I have received two cease and desist letters from lawyers. The first one was because I used a Disney character in a pattern. That was just stupidity on my part. The second letter was for a unity cross pattern. In that case, the pattern was completely my design. What I did not know is that there is a gentleman who owns the trademark on all two-part unity crosses. I'm still not sure that one would hold up in court but I did not want to find out. I removed the pattern.
The cease and desist letters from lawyers are intimidating, to say the least. That's okay because original designers have every right to protect their art. I do my best to be thoughtful about my designs.
So what does that mean to scrollers who want to cut and sell a project that is a trademarked graphic? Legally it is simple. Unless to get permission in the form of a license you are breaking the law and are subject to litigation. It is true that 99% of the time you will probably get away with it because your market is so small. If you get unlucky enough to be that 1% you may not be happy. I have seen it happen to a pattern designer and his outcome was really bad.
If you go to a craft sale or flea market you will almost always see hand made university mascot logos and other popular items for sale. These are rarely licensed items. If the right person sees these items there is a chance you will receive a cease and desist letter. It's rare but it happens.
In my case, the odds of getting a letter from a lawyer is much higher. My exposure is much larger. I send out nearly half a million newsletters a month. The images of my patterns are all over the web. So not only do I not want to take from the original artist I don't want to get in hot water.
This subject is often discussed in online forums. There are tons of incorrect information out there. That is somewhat because of the laws are complicated. Some people like to share an opinion as fact. I do my best to stay out of giving advice because I am not educated enough in the subject to be accurate. There is one piece of advice I will give. If in doubt get a lawyer who knows trademark/copyright law. If you can't afford the lawyer then you can't afford the consequences.
