Make sure you read the important note below.
The scroll saw is a versatile tool. I cut this entirely on the scroll saw. You don't have to use only the scroll saw but I just wanted you to know that you can and it will work fine. I did use a disk sander to clean up any wavy edges.
I needed a spray can holder for my shop. After looking around my shop I realized that I would rather have two or three smaller can holders than one large one. My plan is to have one at the spray booth for my spray finish. One by my workbench for spray adhesive. I might also make one for the small amount of spray paint I keep. That also gave me the chance to make it on the scroll saw and make a pattern for you guys.
I used 1/4" thick material to keep the weight down and that is what I had handy. 1/4" MDF would be inexpensive and plenty strong enough to hold six cans. As you can see from the picture I used both MDF and BB ply. I ran out of MDF and did not want to go to the home store. I'm going to paint it so the material will get covered. The assembly is mostly slot and tab so everything goes together easily.
IMPORTANT:
I want you to look closely at the next picture. There is a feature of this unit that you may not like. Note that the cans in the top rack sit on top of the cans in the bottom rack. I did this because I wanted to keep the unit as small and close to the wall as possible. I don't mind slightly lifting the top can to remove the bottom can. If you find that annoying then this is a pattern you may want to skip. With the bottom can, removed the top can just sits on the lower shelf.
The bottom shelf has a front lip so I can lay my Exacto knife or pencil. I like having extra pencils all over the shop. I am constantly forgetting to put my pencil back in my apron so it's nice to have some lying around.
