This guitar puzzle is 14" tall. It is cut from 3/4" wood but you could cut it from thinner 1/4" Baltic birch plywood for a more traditional puzzle.
When you are cutting puzzles from thicker wood it is important to get a square cut. Without a square cut, your pieces will be wedge-shaped. This causes them you slide out one direction but wedge tight when you try to remove it from the other direction.
Here are a few tips to get a square cut when cutting thicker wood.
1. Wood Choice: Choose the wood carefully. Hard Maple is not a good choice. Hard maple is hard. When you cut harder wood you have a tendency to push harder and bow the blade. The bowed blade will make a bowed cut. Use a softer wood and take your time with the cuts. Let the blade cut at its own speed. Don't push it.
2. Square the blade to the table. Be particular with the adjustment. The more square the blade the more square the cut will be.
3. While cutting keep as light a grip on the board as you can. Always keep the pressure on the front of the blade.
4. Remember that the thicker the blade you use the wider the kerf. The wider the kerf the looser the puzzle pieces will fit. The trade-off here is that it is easier to get a square cut with a thicker blade. I used a #3 blade(.013" thick) for this puzzle. Which is a thicker kerf than I normally want for a puzzle. On the other hand, I was able to get a very square cut in the 3/4" cherry wood. The pieces are slightly loose.
If I cut this puzzle from 1/4" thick Baltic birch plywood I would use a specific puzzle blade that is .008" thick. A 2/0 blade is also about the same thickness. These blades will give a nice snug fit.
I did not apply a finish to this guitar puzzle. I am okay with it just being natural. A thick finish can affect the fit of the pieces. When I do add a finish to a thick puzzle it is usually just an oil finish.
