Horse and Cowboy Scroll Saw Pattern.

This western art piece is ~ 13" X 10". There are two layers. The second layer is a backer board. As always, the backer board is optional. You could just as easily glue up a 3/4" thick board and cut the pattern from it.

I painted the backer board blue to add some contrast. I wanted to use black but my paint supply is running low. Blue turned out okay. I don't use paint or stain very often. I prefer a natural finish. In this case, it needed more contrast so I went with paint. I am not a fan of how Baltic birch plywood stains so I avoid it.

I know that many of you purchase the 12" X 12" X 1/4" sheets of Baltic birch plywood from Amazon.
Even though this pattern is 13" wide it will fit and a 12" X 12" sheet. You just need to angle the pattern on the board.

To hang this piece on the wall you need to find the center of gravity that keeps the cowboy horizontal. It is approximately where the red dot is in this illustration. Install your hanger at that point. A short length of hanging wire across that point will give you some wiggle room to keep the piece straight while hanging on the wall.

What is Intarsia? Judy Gale Roberts Studio.

It has been fantastic the number of new scrollers I have heard from this year. I don't have numbers to back it up but I believe we have seen a surge of interest in the hobby. I'm sure the lockdown has something to do with it but growth is good.

A new scroller emailed me today with questions about intarsia. I'm not the best person to ask because I am not a skilled intarsia artist but I'll give you a definition then send you to the expert in the field.

To put it simply, intarsia is the art of cutting different species/colors of wood and assembling them to make a picture. The wood is generally contour sanded to give depth. In advanced intarsia, the color and grain direction of the wood is used to help enhance the 3d look of the piece.

If this sounds interesting to you then here is where you need to go next. Judy Gale Roberts is a master-level intarsia artist, pattern designer, teacher, and nice lady. Her work is awe-inspiring and even if you are not interested in taking up intarsia you should visit her web page.

Spend some time looking at the patterns she has for sale and you just might get hooked. She also has some free patterns available to help you try out the hobby before you jump in with both feet. The nurse teddy above is one of her free patterns.

I know that looking at Judy's work makes intarsia look difficult. At her level it does require a good deal of skill. The good news is that even beginners can get good results with just a little patience. Judy has patterns available for every skill level.

Make sure you look at the Books and DVDs section. Intarsia is one area where a little instructions goes a long way.
