The worldwide pandemic has been responsible for a lot of firsts for people. For many of us, we experienced our first home haircut. This little sign shows what my mind was thinking when my wife picked up the scissors.
As it turned out Patty did a good job. I think I have had five or six home haircuts now and she has gotten better each time. I do look forward to getting back in to see my barber and talk basketball.
Drilling Starter Holes.
There is a strategy to drilling starter holes for scroll saw blades. Here are a couple of tips.
Don't drill too close to the pattern line. The backside of the board will sometimes tear out around the point where the bit comes through. If the tear-out is bad enough it may leave an ugly scar on the project. Large bits cause more backside tear-out. Don't use a bit larger than you need.
Use a sacrificial backer board when drilling. This will help avoid the tear-out mentioned above.
There are some patterns that have very small interior cuts. A set of micro-drill bits can get small enough for even #2/0 blades. They are tiny. Just make sure you buy several of the small bits. They break easily. You will also need a chuck that can hold the small bits.
I almost always drill the hole close to a point in the pattern like the illustration above. This makes the transition from starting the cut to completing the cut invisible. If you start on a curve you will usually have a nub to try to sand away. Best to just avoid the nub if you can.
