Sometimes it is nice to have a very quick project to make for friends or to demonstrate the scroll saw. Keys are something that almost every man woman and child will need at some point. Key Fobs are an essential accessory for keys.
For under 50 cents you can quickly cut a personalized initial key fob. You can use up all of the tiniest scraps of wood you have in your scrap box. The supplies you need are shown with Amazon links below.
If you want to apply a quick-drying finish then the spray acrylic will dry to touch in 10 to 15 minutes and dry to handle in 2 hours. Because I am always under a deadline I use this stuff all the time. I place the project under a fan to speed up the dry time. I will often grab the project to take to the photo booth in under 5 minutes. It takes a little practice to get a nice even coat but the trick is 2 or 3 light coats. After the first coat, I use 000 steel wool to knock off the bumps.
Some species of wood are better for key fobs than others. A tight grain wood will be stronger. Woods like red oak can have wide-open grain and tend to break easier. Something like hard maple holds up very well but it is rather bland looking at this size. For really inexpensive fobs you can use 1/4" Baltic birch plywood. With a thick enough gloss finish the BB plywood looks good.
