Be careful in the shop:
I recently talked with a reader of the blog who had an accident in his shop. The injury was serious enough that he needed a couple of days off of work but could have been much worse. He is doing fine now but he wanted me to share his story so others might not make the same mistake.
Most of the time when you hear about a shop accident you think of a table saw cutting fingers or maybe a serious cut from a band saw. His injury was not caused by a blade.
The temperature was hot and he was in his shop in shorts and sandals. While trying to move a benchtop disk sander, it fell and landed on his foot. Luckily his foot did not take the full impact of the heavy sander but it was enough to lose a toenail and be very painful.
In most commercial workplaces you are required to wear safety equipment when in a dangerous location. When I was still working I had to wear safety shoes in a few of my accounts. I'll be honest, I did not like those shoes. We also had slip-on steel foot guards. They were even worse.
I'll never talk myself into wearing safety shoes in my shop but I don't wear open-toed shoes in the shop. I don't recall ever dropping something heavy on my foot in the shop but I run into things all the time.
I know that a lot of guys wear sandals in their shop. If that is you then remember to watch your toes.
