I am stuck on layered patterns right now. I'll move on to something else tomorrow. This layered doves pattern is going to be a little tricky to cut. The doves on the branch and the individual dove can be a little fragile. You will probably want to use Baltic birch plywood for the extra strength.
Dowell Drilling Tip:
I can't remember where I saw this tip but I have used it many times over the years. Occasionally I will need to drill a hole in the center of a dowel. In this case, I needed a spacer for a nut and bolt. It is a half-inch diameter wooden dowel. I needed a 1/4" bolt to go through the spacer.
You can do this by hand if you are careful but I make a quick jig to make it safer and more accurate.
Select a drill bit the same size as the dowel you will be drilling. Clamp a sacrificial board across your drill press.
Drill a hole in the board. You don't need to drill all the way through the board. Make sure the clamped board does not move from this point forward.
Install the smaller drill bit. Install the wooden dowel in the hole. You will have to play with the height of the drill press before you start to make sure you can get the large bit out without moving the table.
As long as you don't allow anything to move the smaller drill bit is now aligned with the center of the dowel. You need to hold the dowel or it will spin and create smoke. I use pliers. It is safer than trying to hold it with your fingers. If you don't want the pliers to damage the dowel then wrap them with a paper towel.
Drill the center hole slowly, lifting out the bit every 1/8" to clear the hole of shavings.
Now you should have a hole in the middle of the dowel. It won't always be perfectly centered but it is usually close enough.
