Alex has these layered scroll saw patterns down to a fine art. He has dozens of them on his Etsy page and they are all great. I saw this one today and it is one of my favorites. I have always enjoyed tropical fish so this pattern caught my attention.
I have not asked Alex but I believe he is using a thin hardboard for his layers. Hardboard is basically a higher-density MDF. This would be a less expensive option than 1/8" Baltic birch plywood. I just ordered a few sheets to test. I'll let you know how it works.
Maybe this is finally some good news on tool prices. I monitor daily price changes in a few tools. The Delta 40-694 scroll saw is one. I have in the past said this was one of the best bang for the buck scroll saws you could buy. When it hit $299 it was simply the best deal period.
The Delta is far from the best scroll saw you can buy but for 1/3rd the price of many saws it performs quite well.
Unfortunately during the pandemic, the price rose to $518.87 on Amazon. That was not an unfair price but it made me reconsider my best bang for the buck consideration. I was hoping the price would start to come back down as shipping problems lessened.
Today I see that it has dropped almost $26 to $493.06. That is not the incredible price of $299 that I purchased one for in October of 2020 but at least it moved down. Maybe we will see tools start to come back to some level of normal soon. The Delta 40-694 priced under $500 is what I consider a good value. If it stays at this price I would still recommend it. If it continues to drop I would consider that good news.
Construction lumber has finally started coming back down in price from the crazy highs of early this year. Maybe tools will be joining the price drop crowd. Fingers crossed.
