38 Oldsmobile Coupe Scroll Saw Pattern.

This 38 Oldsmobile is 10.25" long. In the pattern I suggest using 3/4" thick wood but just about any wood will work fine. There is some veining in this pattern that will be a little difficult to cut. Veins that turn at a sharp angle are difficult. There is only one of those above the rear window. This piece is large enough that you could drill a 1/16" starter hole at the intersection where that angle starts to give yourself room to make the turn.

No handmade project is perfect!

There are always a lot of new people joining the scroll saw hobby after Christmas. They got their first scroll saw and have jumped in to make those beautiful handmade projects they have seen. Things do not always go as smoothly as they had hoped. Yes, there is a learning curve.

Remember that these are handmade items and not going to be perfect. As a matter of fact, you don't want them to look perfect. Small errors add character to handmade items. It can actually add value if they don't look machine-made.

I am not telling you to ignore all errors. There is a difference between handmade and sloppily made. When you evaluate your work try to understand why that error happened. If you don't understand the cause it is more difficult to improve it.

Come up with a strategy to correct the error. On the next project that you cut, emphasize that strategy and see if the problem area gets better. If it works then you have learned something. If it does not work you have also learned something. Either way, you made progress.

If you continue to struggle with a technique then it may be time to search out others for possible solutions. Local woodworking clubs, books, and of course the internet are all places to look for answers.

It may sound corny but "the journey is as important as the destination". If you can't learn to enjoy the time spent at the saw then it becomes work. Most of us start the hobby to relax so don't turn it into work.

Think Safety

Remember to keep the safety of yourself and others in your work shop in your thoughts at all times. Always wear eye and ear protection. Follow all the manufactures warnings that came with your power tools. If I demonstrate something on this web site that you don't feel is safe, don't do it. Your safety is your responsibility. Fingers are handy things, try to keep all of them.
