This Easter cross is two 1/4" thick layers. Easter is just over a month away.
I reached out to Makeblock and ask for a review unit of their xTool D1 Diode laser engraver/cutter. They were kind enough to send me one and this video is my review/demonstration.
I am reviewing this laser because I get more and more laser questions every year. Many of my scroll saw patterns are downloaded by the laser community.
The good news is that the scroll saw and laser engraver work great together. The scroll saw has a much thicker cutting capacity than a laser and the laser can customize many projects with its engraving capability. When you combine the two you have the best of both worlds.
There are different types of laser engravers. Fiber lasers are designed to engrave metal. CO2 lasers are for cutting and engraving wood and other materials such as acrylic and leather. Diode lasers are generally less powerful than CO2 lasers but they also cost a fraction of even the least expensive CO2 laser.
The xTool D1 is a diode laser. It is one of the most powerful diode lasers available and can engrave beautifully. It has decent cutting capacity for this wood, paper. leather, and acrylic. It will cut 1/8" thick bass plywood in a single pass and 1/4" thick bass plywood in just a few passes.
