My goal for this pattern was to make it a beginner-level pattern. I tried to keep the shapes easy to cut and I did not use any interior cuts. If you are working with an entry-level scroll saw then you should be able to cut this pattern without much trouble.
I cut the pieces in under 30 minutes so you should be able to finish this project on a single setting.
I used 1/4" Baltic birch plywood to keep the cost of materials down. There are under $5 in materials used. If you want to use this as a gift or sell it at a craft show the expenses should make that feasible.
Speaking of Baltic birch plywood. I buy mine from Ocooch Hardwoods. They are not a sponsor and I do not have any relationship with them other than as a customer. I just like their products and they always ship in a timely manner. If you are looking for scroll saw ready hardwoods or BB plywood then check them out.
When I paint a backer board that will have pieces glued to it I mask off small areas for the glue. See the image below.
When you glue to a painted area the bond is only as strong as the bond between the board and the paint. I did see a video the other day where the person that he has good luck gluing wood to paint using Gorilla wood glue. I have not tried that but he has been doing it successfully for a long time.
Spirals by Steve:
Steve Garrison produces some of the most unique scroll saw patterns ever created. All the sea shells below were created using primarily a scroll saw. The video below shows his latest creation and his techniques for completing the project. I have highlighted Steve in past years but if you have not seen his work do yourself a favor and watch the video.

I received an email today asking what I did for my career before I retired. I spent almost 40 years working for Xerox Corp as a technical service engineer(Fixit Guy). I started in 1979 working on copiers. Over the years we branched out into servicing printers and computers.
In the last few years of my career, I worked mostly on large-scale full-color printers like the Igen in the video below. The video shows an installation of an Igen. The video is just over three minutes but in real-time, most installs took a few days to complete depending on how many of us worked the install.
These printers sold for half a million dollars depending on the accessories could go much higher. They are pretty complicated machines but we had tons of diagnostic software and easy access support to engineering. Service calls normally took a few hours but some could go for days. Those long calls would get lots of attention from people who you did not want attention from. Thousands of dollars an hour could be lost and that gets attention. :)
The service contracts included 24/7 support so I worked a lot of middle-of-the-night calls.
Working a straight 24 hours was not common but it would happen. That is what finally drove me to retirement. What I was able to do without sleep at 40 was way more difficult at 55. :)
Xerox changed a lot over my career but it was always a good place to work. Over my whole career, I never had a bad boss. They were always demanding but treated us with respect. We were all self-starters and generally handled problems so they left us alone.
I miss the people and my customers but I don't miss the long hours without sleep.
The video is a pretty typical day when I worked. These are not Xerox tech doing this install but they look like they did a good job. We were not allowed to wear blue jeans.
